He's a real engineer though, not a synthesized logic jockey. If he only needed a year to work on hypertransport, K7 and x86-64 then revamping K10 will be trivial for him. Not to mention the bit you missed out -- he was the lead architect on K8.
And AMD is in a desperate situation too, desperation can often drive the right individuals to amazing acheivements.
I think Apple took pity on AMD and sent him back there to try and salvage the situation.
