====================

i thought the benches were imminent. ANYway, what do they expect - for gaming? A 2700K would be as fast - at least until you get to multi-GPU and then we would see the faster processor and there would also be the full 16x+16x PCIe bandwidth.

Quote:
a Chinese tech website, http://www.inpai.com.cn (Google translation) has done what Chinese tech websites do best and that's leak benchmarks and slides, Intel's NDA be damned. They pit the current i7-2600K quad core CPU against the upcoming i7-3960X hexa core CPU and compare them in several ways. The take home message appears to be that gaming performance on BF3 & Crysis 2 is identical, while the i7-3960X uses considerably more power, as one might expect from an extra two cores. The only advantage appears to come from the x264 & Cinebench tests. If these benchmarks prove accurate, then gamers might as well stick with the current generation Sandy Bridge CPUs, especially as they will drop in price, before being end of life'd. While this is all rather disappointing, it's best to take leaked benchmarks like this with a (big) grain of salt and wait for the usual gang of reputable websites to publish their reviews on launch day, November 14th. Softpedia reckons that these results are the real deal, however. There's more benchmarks and pictures after the jump.

Too many cores.

You seem to be proving that an i3 is still a viable gaming processor.

I've been wondering lately if I should have gone with an i3 instead of my Phenom II X4.

They are about the same with the X4 a bit stronger for gaming. i3 on Z68 MB has an upgrade path to i5-2500 or 2600K and/or Ivy Bridge while AM3+ has an upgrade to BD and PD

. . . and if you have AM3 .. then you should have got an i3 - especially because it saves a lot of energy and you are now at a dead end

Frankly, I'm not all that impressed unless you need gobs and gobs of ram. I think that if I were in the market for an enthusiast platform I'd be waiting to see what Ivy Bridge can offer.

This is Intel's flagship which is designed to embarrass Bulldozer

If you run GTX 580 Tri-SLI, it is a great CPU - or for professional rendering
-- that's about it

X58 and SB is still adequate for GTX 580 SLI and HD 6970 Tri-Cire and no reason to upgrade to X79 yet

No need. 2500K and up are already more than capable of that.

Who outside of people doing it for a living cares? And if you are doing it for a living you'll build a dedicated box for it, separate from your everyday rig.

Tech sites. i would want one just to benchmark Quadfire and Tri-SLI
- and of course the extreme enthusiasts - those with 3 x 2560x1600

i'd love it - it would keep me warm in the Winter - one box running QuadFire and Bulldozer; the other SBe with Tri-SLI
:D
