We've seen the previews of the chip but they don't show any overclocking results.

Some people are saying it overclocks worse than sandy bridge, and others are saying it hits 5ghz on air no problem.

What do you guys think? It's got to clock higher because it's built on a finer process, no?

It depends. If Intel's emphasis is on power savings, it won't overclock as well

i predict that it will overclock a little better.
(or i will buy a 2600K instead - or just wait for Haswell and maybe try for 4.4GHz on my i7-920)

What kind of cooling do you have on your 2600k?

You would like my havik 140. Those i7s get way hotter than the phenom iis.

i have i7-920 - stock clock is 2.6GHz

--it is at 4.2GHz with a Thermaltake FrioOCK cooler. My article is going up as soon as i get three or four other articles written first. i have also Noctua's flagship NH-DH-14 cooler; i might be able to get another +200MHz out of the old Bloomfield (it is over 2-1/2 years old; the components are barely still in warranty and it *still* keeps up with a mildly overclocked i7-2700K)
:hello:

So you're on high end air cooling already. How are your temps?

Yeah that seems hot but I'm sure it's fine for an Intel chip.

With this massive heatsink I just got it only spins at 600rpm most of the time and keeps my OC'ed PII at around 45C under full load. I can barely hear it even when it spins at its full 1300rpm. If the noise bothers you with your FrioOCK, you might enjoy the Havik 140. Your temps would stay about the same, though.

The noctua coolers are known for being among the quietest in their class

The FriOCK is also a really good cooler; it can get loud with the fans on max - mine are below max

I have a feeling that this Havik 140 is even quieter and more powerful than the Noctuas. Xbit declared it the king of air cooling, and I read another article that said it's only emitting 26db which was about half as many db compared to the other coolers of its class.

It's about as quiet under load as my Hyper 212+ was when it ran about 1/2 of the fan speed.

(ROFLMAO) (joint)
Apoppins i7 is a Nehalem not a Sandy Bridge. Even at 4.4 ghz my i7 2600K doesn't generate anything like the heat my Phenom II 965 does. I'm tempted to try water cooling with the Phenom, not because I think it will cool any better, but because I reckon I could drive a steam turbine with the heat generated and get my power for free! BullDozer would be even better for this!
