At one point in time almost everyone use to tell me if I'm buying a Laptop go Intel because AMD was not currently on the level in the mobile market they always told me I could go AMD if I wanted for desktops but do not take that path for Laptops. Is that still the case?

I'm not too sure but I have noticed that there are at times toned down models of processors in small Laptops like the 11" models, as I have found my balance of performance and size in these small Laptops which have replaced Netbooks in my life I'm looking to replace my current "Acer Aspire 1830-3783" which runs an "i3-330UM", which leads to my other question. In terms of AMD mobile platform what is the AMD equivalent to an i3 and also to the i5?

Really depends on what you will be doing on the laptop.

I got an E-machine with AMD and it's fine for I do on it. It runs cool and the battery lasts all day.

Well I moved away from Intel Atom due to its limitations (most that I do not know and I tend to find out about it at the wrong time e.g. when I tried to run a Virtual Desktop) so I was willing to get even a Celeron Processor in a small Laptop I was fortunately enough to find an i3 model. So I'm not looking any ground breaking performance but I would like the processor to be able to handle any task that an average processor can handle. The Intel Atoms were built with mainly battery life in mind from what I can tell I personally don't mind getting only 3.5-4 hours out of a machine if I can still get access to what has become the norm feature set of processors, so right now the only thing that comes to mind is I would like it to be able to handle Virtualization.

Wiki can explain better than myself
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualBox
In short to support hardware virtualization the processor should support either VT-x(Intel) or V(amd).

Yes that is what I was referring to the ability to run Virtualbox, Virital PC, VMware etc.... so which ever version of virtualization that is that is the one I'm referring.

A lot of people like the AMD laptop CPUs because the integrated graphics are better than what you would get with Intel.

That said, I would want Ivy Bridge in my next laptop and nothing else.
