"Hewlett-Packard (HP) is to axe up to 30,000 jobs in efforts to make the company more competitive in the face of the rising might of the smartphone and tablet markets.

The company has nearly 350,000 staff, making the cuts close to 10 percent of its entire workforce. Anonymous sources close to the company cite figures between 25,000 and 30,000 as the estimated job losses on the table."

Isn't HP getting back into the tablet race - but with a Win8 tablet?

I don't see how the economy can ever get back on track with all the mass layoffs still occurring regularly.

This is 30,000 jobs world wide. Anyone know the breakdown by country?

And HP has been doing badly - making stupid decisions and then dumping whole lines only to return to the same idea over again. They lost their way and instead of cutting out the dummies that direct the company, they fire the employees who do the real work. Reminds me of another company that fired 10% of its workforce and is still lost.

Normally this is fine. The employees leave one sinking ship for others that are growing. When all companies start to flounder due to bad decisions and a disastrous world wide economy, then it is a time to panic. As if that will do any good. If it all ends up in the toilet, we all go together. There is nothing that is secure.
