So ... Ocre ... since you think IB is a success with oc'ing .. how do you feel about Kepler overclocking?
:)

Personally, i think with IB it is the new transistors and the newer steppings will probably overclock better.
. . . and with Kepler, it apparently just needs a bit more voltage.

the are several reason for keplers overclocking limits which were intentionally imposed. the biggest was the gtx 590s blowing up in reviews. This was an embarrassment to the company and they wanted to keep something like this an impossibility. things like pcie limits and warranties come to mind.

I dont think the 680 is a bad overclocker with the restrictions. they do pretty well. obviously its lack of voltage is the biggest thing holding it back. But nvidia spent tons of time and money working out a dynamic clock based on consumption. Its not like anything they have ever done. The overclocking is done with this system still working. This dynamic clock auto tunes voltage as you push up the limits. All of it works even overclocked, its a balance like a tight wire.

over time i expect mods to come out which allow you to really blow up a gtx680. They are becoming so popular its going to happen. I am not talking about HW mods but new SW tricks that are out of what nvidia supports. Nvidia has change the way everything works with the gk104 and in time we will see the limitations broke. but its not all bad, nvidia already supports overclocking. its not bad when you look at past cards. AMD just happens to have more control right now, out of the box.

kepler will apparently hit 1500mhz on air with 1.3v. that's a very big gain from a small boost in voltage.

its a great overclocker, its just locked out for most people. I am sure with time we will see more SW come out thats unofficial.

It's hard to say. If nVidia has locked it down in the BIOS there's not much you can do without a hard mod. I looked at the hard mod instructions and it looked complicated as well.
