The very first thing to check are the jumpers if you have an IDE drive. An IDE cable can support two devices, one as a Primary and one as a Seconday. These are sometimes referred to as Master and Slave.

The jumper is in and is aligned to work as slave as I was trying to boot from a machine and then see if I could browse the hard drive.

If it is the only drive in the system or the only drive on an IDE channel then the jumper settings probably won't matter. If there is another drive in the system and on the same cable then one needs to be set as master and the other as slave and the drives put on the correct ribbon cable headers.
Also check you have the right end of the cable plugged into the motherboard.

Apparently if you can buy the *exact* same hard drive you can transplant the platters over. Or as others have said, try the freezer trick.

With the older models sure but they state the newer models PCB contains so much information unique to that specific hard drive that even if you switch over a similar PCB it will not recognize the drive.

And do not stick it in a bag or water may condense - just place it in the freezer
then be prepared to copy as much data as you can Do you always not use a bag Apo? Because these guys seem to be placing the hard drives in ziplock bags.

Nope.. . it doesn't matter. Your freezer isn't a swamp and it isn't in there very long. what are you waiting for?
