http://www.extremetech.com/computing/13 ... pu-and-gpuQuote: AMD is hosting its Fusion Developer Summit this week, and the overarching theme is heterogeneous computing and the convergence of the CPU and GPU. During the initial keynote yesterday, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Global Business Units (for AMD) Dr. Lisa Su stepped on stage to talk about the company’s future with HSA (Heterogeneous System Architectures).
One of the slides she presented showed off the company’s Fusion APU roadmap which included the Trinity APU’s successor — known as Kaveri. Kaveri will be able to deliver up to 1TFLOPS of (likely single precision) compute performance, thanks to its Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU and a Steamroller-based CPU. The really interesting reveal, though, is that Kaveri will feature fully shared memory between the GPU and CPU.
And much more

The GPU in Trinity looks to be very powerful considering it is an APU.

It seem pretty obvious that they are betting on APU's, but is it enough?

They wouldnt survive at all if they had to depend on their barely profitable GPU division. You wouldnt know it from all the fanatics but AMDs gpu market is barely making any profits as of late. When it is pointed out ppl throw wild conspiracies claiming AMD is really just doctoring the books to make the GPU segment look so bad. Its sort of crazy to think that way but these people warp all reality to the point where drastic isnt a powerful enough word to fit But seriously, AMD has really not been making much profits at all out of their GPU division. ATI was a million times more successful at such. I have a few theories on the reason why AMD hasnt been so good at making money with GPUs, especially compared to the way ATI used to. Regardless, AMD cannot possibly function at all off their GPU division. AMD is still a pretty large company. You may not think much of their CPUs but for AMD its what pays the bills. They arent able to turn a lot of profit there either, but it gives them a hell of revenue.

I'm not surprised to learn that their GPU division isn't making much money. They are taking months to react to what nVidia is doing. They need to immediately cut prices of products like the 7970 when things like the GTX 680 come out. Even this whole "ghz" 7970 thing is taking way too long. I mean, come on, I'm sure that 99% of the 7970s out there will do 1ghz on stock volts. It's silly.

ATi did not have the "sweet spot" pricing if my memory serves me right. AMD instituted it and then obviously changed it with 7900 series; about the worst time to do so.
i agree that AMD had painfully slow reaction time. As if they were in denial. If things were turned around, Nvidia would have had their cards down in price the same day - or anticipated the launch (as they have done so); Nvidia is much quicker to react to the changing market than either AMD or Intel, i believe.

When you refer to "GHz edition", it may be well above 1000MHz. i believe they are targeting around 1100MHz; enough to catch the stock GTX 680 and the OC'd ones will beat it.
But then, it is time for Nvidia's second round of GTX 680/670. The battle will be undertaken on two fronts - cheap and plentiful stock HD 670s and overclocked for performance and price. You know they have got to be anticipating AMD's move. It's isn't a 7980 afaik (although it should be, if AMD was planning ahead). A simple respin won't save them although you will hear the spin at the other forum (and lots about "compute")
