How would you rate the game? Compared against Oblivion, the Fallout games, Diablo1/2, Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, Skyrim, etc..? Is Gothic 3 really that good?

Yes. The world is prettier and more detailed and the story - right up until the ending - is better

Gothic 3 was a great game killed by bugs and some stupid designs.

Have not had a chance to apply the patch yet, but I'd say Skyrim is a testament to just how good Gothic 3 was. Lots and lots of things in Skyrim have been "inspired" by Gothic 3.

How are you rating Skyrim, so far?

How many hours into it? How does it compare to Oblivion and to G3?

Skyrim is excellent, and at least Gothic 3's equal, if not better now. It makes Oblivion look like amateur hour, frankly. I'm quite shocked at how much improvement Bethesda has managed to make over Oblivion and Morrowind.

I've just started my second play through of Skyrim. I'd have to say at least 150 hours if not more have been sunk into it so far.

The patch all but eliminates stuttering in the game except for that caused by loading world cells (the game also used to constantly compile graphics shaders as it needed them too). It changes the lighting model from Blinn-Phong to Phong. Things like the bottoms of open chests render properly now. The custom shader AA has been replaced by FXAA (very blurry though). There is a "color-grading" graphics option too, which is just weird, seems to set a 256 color palette or something - don't use IMO.

Save games are not compatible with the new patch. You can't sit on a bench, or cook food at a fire / sleep / sharpen weapons when you are being attacked anymore (thank god!)

Sound appears to be working better, but I have to get up to the bridge between Silden and Geldern to know for sure if all the bugs are fixed.
