http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/15713/1/Our current Nvidia GPUS are named Tesla; Now Fermi is slated to be the new name for what we called "GT 300" ... so (and i am speculating, of course), It looks like a radical change of architecture (to me) .. not G T 300 - but GF X00 = GPU Fermi(just as GT is GPU Tesla) ! What do you think? Nvidia only changes their GPU naming (after scientists) when they change their architecture (radically). Of course, i believe Nvidia is heading away from gaming a bit and into the professional and Open Markets; so i expect a LOT more CUDA and attention to parallel processing. On top of that, they clearly *have to* beat 5870/5890 and 5870-X2 with GFX Fermi. They are saying Fermi is going "nuclear" by their choice; i expect another "G80" [my opinion].

NVIDIA has a new chip coming out....hmmm....that's great. Buyers will have the opportunity to compare performance and features then make a choice as to which product best suits their needs.

that is an understatement i am looking forward to a new GF No. 100 is fine with me .. nice ana firmi Quote: Buyers will have the opportunity to compare performance and features then make a choice as to which product best suits their needs. Not if they visit ATF Video first. ATi is the only company worth ANY consideration there*. (*according to the majority of the resident trol .. posters there)

Here we go, Nordic HW is running with it: http://www.nordichardware.com/news,9972.htmland if you read it, they said NOTHING; IF what they just printed is true, it is not "GT" at all i need to write articles like this (not)

A new architecture is great and all, I just hope the drivers don't sh!t themselves like they did with the G80 at release.
I do not want to go through that again.

I imagine this new architecture will bring great things, like almost all prior nvidia architectures also have (with the possible exception of nv3x which stuck too close to nv2x, really).
As for the "going nuclear" comment, lets just say I regard g80 as the fission bomb and fully expect fermi to be the fusion bomb, long before AMD tries to fire up their CONfusion reactor...

I do not want to go through that again. Yes, it would be preferable if they just gave us more of the same like ATi instead of advancing the industry and possibly having some driver issues with ancient games no one plays anymore. It would be an epic fail if they brought out a core that's not only faster than the 5870, but offered more features, if it couldn't play Serious Sam 1 with the patch or Red Faction........ http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/mdk/review.htmlYou should test it extensively with MDK, that's a fun game that got 8.9/10 back in 1997. If you can find a glitch, you can do a big expose' on ATVF and demand action on nZone! Sarcasm aside, dude, driver issues go with territory with arch changes, and you can't seriously expect hardware companies to keep coding for 10 year old games like you did with the G80.

Actually Rollo, those older games were mostly written to standard API's (OpenGl, Direct3D), and the whole point of a standardised API is to allow applications coded using them to work on any architecture that supports the API.
Given that over time graphics API's have become less and not more restrictive in terms of what they allow the hardware architectures to do, it should be trivially easy to support older versions of the API.
Do you think the PC architecture would have gone on to totally dominate the personal computing industry if it didn't focus as much as it has on backward compatibility? That backward comparability has been much harder to provide than what game code requires of driver engineers.
Personally I'd still like nvidia to enable glide support on G80 and above architectures. There are 3D games out there still that run only on glide - nvidia has the former engineers and an architecture in G80 and above that is more than capable of emulating every aspect of a voodoo chip at more than real-time speed.

I do not want to go through that again. Well, letsee what was happening at the time .. New Operating system - Vista and DX10; and ATi had SUCKY drivers also -- you did not suffer with 2900XT like i did Win7 is Vista with less bloat -i doubt there will be many driver issues What is probably really "new" (imo) for Fermi is all the enhancements to parallel processing; i think gamers will be disappointed that ALL of the die is not set aside for gaming . . . i won't mention "GT300" at the GTC Go Fermi!
