I'd say nvidia is taking advantage of AMD's struggles despite tight wafer/fab capacity by doing clever things with the wafers and dies they already have ala the GTX 560Ti core 448.

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zht ... highlight=Quote: NVIDIA tomorrow kicks off GTC Asia, the next major event in its international series of GPU Technology Conference (GTC) events focused on the latest advances and research in science, academic and commercial fields enabled by GPU computing. NVIDIA president and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang will deliver the two-day event's opening keynote on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 9:30 am Beijing Time (CST), at Beijing's China National Convention Center (Keynote Room, 4th Floor Hall A). He will discuss GPU technology in graphics, visualization and computing, and will illustrate how the symbiotic nature of visual and parallel computing is enabling breakthroughs in high-performance computing (HPC). The speech will be streamed live on the NVIDIA(R) GTC Asia web site: www.gputechconf.cn or www.gputechconf.cn/page/home-en.html. GTC Asia will feature leaders from top scientific organizations and research institutions participating in a range of presentations, tutorials, panel discussions, roundtables and instructional sessions. The event is intended for developers, programmers and research scientists working on complex computational problems by harnessing the power of GPUs.

If January 10th's release date rumors turn out to be true for AMD's hd7000 high end cards, they'll have a considerable head start again over Nvidia. GCN's performance is a rather large question mark though. I'm guessing the hd7970 will be around 40% faster than the hd6970 at gaming, but that is only my guess.

We believe the company's GeForce (GPU), Quadro, and Tesla businesses combined are down about 10-12% Q/Q, with Quadro/Tesla somewhat weaker than GPU," Susquehanna Financial analyst Chris Caso wrote in a note to clients.
In November, the company indicated that it expected Quadro to be up sequentially, Tesla to be flat, desktop GPU to be up sequentially and notebook GPU flat to slightly down. In total, Nvidia guided revenue flat, plus or minus 2 percent sequentially.
"We think the company is significantly below that plan at this point in the quarter. Given that Chinese New Year is occurring in late January, we think the channel will be loathe to take on additional inventory ahead of the slowdown, preferring to work through existing inventory," Caso said.
On a positive note, lead times for the company's enthusiast product line (GTX570/580/590) are up, indicating strong demand, which should help average selling prices in the quarter.
Meanwhile, the analyst said Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) is having supply issues on its high-end GPU product, which theoretically could benefit Nvidia as a share gainer. But Caso believes the company has not been able to take advantage of AMD's struggles due to a lack of wafer supply. Well, the hard drive market must have stagnated the PC market as a whole by some percentage points. The literal quadrupling of the hard drive prices must have put some potential buyers off from buying/building a new system. It's like the increase of toll rates for cars entering Manhattan from NJ from $8 to $12 last October, reducing the automobile traffic in Manhattan by a NOTICEABLE percentage.

They were very excited over Bulldozer, Phenom 1 and R600 too.......

The internets are reporting that AMD is moving the launch up to Dec. 22nd. At the same time, one of the editors on Fudzilla says the hd7970 should end up around 30% faster than the gtx580..... if that is true, then AMD is going to get their asses handed to them once Nvidia gets out of the gate. Nvidia's second tier Kepler chip (GK104) should be around 30% faster than the gtx580, so AMD's high end won't even touch Nvidia's high end Kepler. It's just a matter of when Nvidia can launch.

Hmm, 3 days before Xmas? Too little, too late?? I do not think GK104 will actually be 30% faster than GTX 580.. maybe 20-25%. The same goes for HD 7970. (180 VP for GTX 580 times 1.25 = 225 VP which is only a couple percentage points away from GTX 590's 233 VP rating.) Quote: ATTENTION: It seems this slide is legit but little bit old, GPU clocks and Load TDP are on real cards lower! GPU clocks are probably under 900 MHz and Load TDP +/- 200W. http://www.obr-hardware.com/2011/12/rad ... -spec.html32 ROPs do not make sense with a 384-bit bus at all. Why couldn't they just do 48 ROPs which would make sense, rather than stick to the same number as that of mid-range Barts GPUs? Also, at less than 900MHz, unlike the previously rumored 1GHz clock, it'd be much less than 20% faster than a GTX 580 - 10-15% is a wild guess. That makes the GTX 580 still a formidable GPU for the next 6 months or so (a quick drop to $300 would make it awesome, then when GK104 comes out in maybe Feb-March a serious price war could start before NV's monster GK110 comes out). It'd be like the 9800GTX days in a way.

When the marketing director of AMD is really, really gone (in about 2 weeks), then I'll be less skeptical of the "leaked" slides (like the one for Bulldozer that stated 2B trannies or the one for Barts XT that stated VLIW5 arch rather than VLIW4). Also, just to quote from http://vr-zone.com/articles/amd-brings- ... 14255.html for the sake of forum readers: Quote: Now, it looks like the Radeon HD 7970 will launch on December 22, 2011, bringing a Christmas gift to all the current AMD users and those that want to become one. This will be a very limited launch, with the real availability only coming on January 9, 2012 - which should be the launch date for the Radeon HD 7950.
The interesting bit about the Radeon HD 7950 is that the board is coming out as a custom part, and AMD gave freedom to partners to clock the part anyway they want, there is flexibility in terms of amount of memory, 3rd party cooling - just like GeForce GTX 560 launch, expect a lot of different parts coming from all the usual suspects.
