Just a head's up. i have been evaluating the LED backlit Viewsonic V3D231 120Hz display for a couple of weeks and it's pretty cool as a monitor. Super thin with good colors and a fast response. Very good connector setup for ease of installaton. It's $350 and it includes 3D polarized glasses and a pair of clip-ons for people with eyeglasses; TriDef 3D SW is also included, so it's inexpensive compared to 3D Vision ($500 for a Display/active glasses).

i am just now starting to compare 3D between the two. On first impressions, the HD3D image is lighter than (even) 3D Vision 2; however you can see the resolution is cut down to each eye. Interesting trade-off. And the movies included with the demo are impressive - but now they pop-out too much.

i need some help from the HD3D (TriDef) guys.

i don't like AMD's HD3D using TriDef SW. It's OK but a PitA to set up for games that do not have a profile. And it doesn't look as good as 3D Vision (1) overall - there are more artifacts and you can see horizontal lines in the image (it uses half of 1080 lines of resolution to each eye).

i will try it for a couple of weeks; but my review will probably give AMD more reason to hate me. Nvidia is the way to go for 3D now (even if the image is darker; and that is fixed with 3D Vision 2). The only thing that may save AMD's HD3D is the HD 7000 series as it is said to be improved.

Or else i am doing something way wrong


And to make this review right, i will focus on 3D Vision (1) versus HD3D (TriDef)
- that will pit the two 23" 120Hz displays against each other (Asus vs Viewsonic) and the two "older" technologies


Nvidia has evidently discounted their older glasses to $100 and no doubt the older displays will also drop in price.

To see the passive 3D that the ViewSonic V3D231 provides, i don't need HDMI 1.4a nor any particular brand of video card (although it must be powerful enough; 3D still takes a penalty on performance as far as i can see, so far)

ViewSonic did not even provide a HDMI cable with it - instead i am using the DVI cable and the TriDef SW and having to make profiles for 3D games. What is included



However, am i missing another kind of 3D? One that uses HDMI 1.4a ?? Or does this display only support TriDef-style passive 3D. There are definite issues with the visuals using the passive polarized glasses.



However, this is a more inexpensive way to do 3D and the monitor itself is very decent.

Compare to 3D Vision - a 23" 120 Hz display is about $300 - the glasses are $100 more. i guess that is just what i am going to do

i have dozens of adapters but i looked all over and the only HDMI cable that i own has a mini-HDMI and a full-sized HDMI connector. Now the ViewSonic display requires a HDMI full size connection out - but none of the AMD cards have a mini-HDMI port


OtOH, the GTXes all have a mini-HDMI port which makes for a HDMI connection to my ViewSonic display without need for an adapter; i'll have to buy one to use my HDMI cable with a Radeon.
--- However, as i understand it, Tri-Def 3D SW also works with GeForce video cards. So this ViewSonic V3D231 will work in S3D with either vendor; albeit with 1/2 the vertical resolution.
