Is this card simply an overclocked version, or something more?

Probably better binned like the 690. Though I can't foresee any possible way to match Nvidia in binning, just look at the 690 power consumption against even single 7970 @ 925Mhz... Woof.

And that is without any overvoltage. When i got my PowerColor HD 7970 up to 1200MHz with a modest voltage boost, it was using more than 100W more than the overclocked GTX 680 - which did not require a voltage boost and it was still faster than the overclocked Radeon. In fact, the GTX 690 used less power than the overvolted 1200MHz 7970.
Unless AMD has a 7980 series waiting in the wings, i expect to see a second price drop for their flagship card very shortly. This time the overclocked versions won't save their pricing.

Sounds good to me! Price drops are a win.
BTW, I assume the 7990 will likely feature these enhanced GPU', yes?

Can't have Nvidia's 3rd tier equalling performance and value with AMD's top tier. tsk tsk. If AMD does offer these Highly clocked Tahiti GPU's, it should be a new skew. 7980.
