The fact that they are at par or even ahead on a hardware level is just icing on the cake. Their crappy drivers become irrelevant in the consoles and their impressive hardware design is a huge asset. "Cheap" is what the console design requires first and foremost. It is a sad thing if it is true that NextBox is going to use a HD 7770. All i can hope for is for the next gen to be a massive flop for consoles and a return to PC gaming. Console gaming is a huge ripoff of PC gaming and crappy low-powered hardware like a 7770 in a next gen console will again hold game development back There's no way they will use a 7770. I think the only outside chance of that is if they pair it with an IGP for Crossfire, but even then it will be too weak. There have been rumors of that though so it's very well possible. They don't really need more than that for 1080p. That's the problem. Kepler in a console at 1080p could probably create photo-realistic rendering. You never know though. I wouldn't put it past Sony to put Big Kepler in the PS4.

That is the rumor. What about S3D? If the next gen supports it, it will need to support 2 x 1080P A GTX 670 or a HD 7870 would not be a bad choice for a console. Anything else would be too power-hungry and hot - or too underpowered

XbitLabs is a rehash .. this one has the *details* http://kotaku.com/5896996/the-next-play ... he-detailsQuote: if you'd like to know what developers are being told to plan for now, here you go. AMD x64 CPU AMD Southern Islands GPU The former, that's largely something we've heard before, but the latter is interesting. That's the name given to many of AMD's 2012 roster of high-end PC cards. The PS4's GPU in particular, we're told, will be capable of displaying Orbis games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets. It'll also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p (the PS3 could only safely manage 3D at 720p). NEXT YEAR Our main source tell us that "select developers" have been receiving dev kits for the new console since the beginning of this year. Revised and improved versions of these kits were sent out around GDC, while more finalised beta units will be shipped to developers towards the end of 2012. That should hopefully give developers plenty of time to have launch games ready for the Orbis' retail release, which will be in time for the 2013 holiday season Quote: The word "Orbis" itself, from Latin, means circle, or ring, or even orbit. Not terribly helpful. Combine it with the name of Sony's new handheld system, though, and you have the common term Orbis Vita (or, in strict Latin, Orbis Vitae). Which means "The circle of life". Could the Vita be playing a very important role in the development and use of the next PlayStation home console? Maybe! Such symbolism also suggests that rather than being a codename, like most companies employ when still developing a console (think NGP, or Durango), this might actually be the machine's final name.

4K resolution is stupid when the PS4 will have a hard enough time doing 1080p with quality AA and AF with those demanding DX11 games. 4K is just going to cripple the whole gaming experience (20fps max, low quality graphics/textures as a tradeoff so that it can handle 4K).

No difference handling 1920x1080 in S3D

I think it's a future feature that the hardware won't handle particularly well for gaming. It will probably be an excellent feature for video playback, though.

Sony will evidently cut out their backward compatibility with PS3 and older games . . . . -- that is what their purchase of Gaikai will allow them to do while still being able to sell older games How can Sony be planning for 4K resolution when a NextBox is going to use a HD 7770?

The only console I could see using a weak GPU like the 7770 is the new Wii. For everything else it makes no sense unless Microsoft is aiming for a $199 MSRP right off the bat to try and catch Sony off guard. BTW is "Southern Islands" the 7970 or is it a new unreleased GPU?
