imagine 4K in S3D .. we are going to need faster GPUs .. to say nothing of much faster CPUs

By the time those displays become more mainstream we will have the computing power to deal with them, perhaps even to manhandle them.

My concern is more that the cable and satellite companies won't have enough bandwidth to feed super HDTV channels at that resolution without butchering the signal with compression artifacts. Even fibre optics will struggle. The only signal that I can see dealing with it is Google's new uber fibre optic setup that they just installed in Kansas City.

Will BluRay be enough for S3D 2K movies? Cable could be an issue with mass adoption.

i guess we are looking about 5 or more years into the future before they become available at any reasonable sort of price. i remember talking to ViewSonic at CES and they said they were looking at super-high resolution displays again. The rep said that they used to sell very expensive ultra-resolution displays. i expect medical imaging displays have that sort of resolution now.

Given recent and likely trends for consumer S3D for the next few years, I'd say it's nothing to be concerned about -- almost nobody is going to be streaming S3D anything anytime soon.

Blu Ray can only handle 1080p at a good bitrate. It could probably do 2K resolution but the length you could record would probably be ~30 minutes and you would have a rather poor bitrate which would result in artifacts. They're probably going to go with a new format with 2K resolution. They might even rely on a fibre optic connection or maybe even flash media.

It's a worldwide trend (or lack thereof to be precise) actually.

Consumers simply are not purchasing 3D gear, or, if they are it is because of features OTHER THAN 3D that the product possesses.

It is inevitable. Even you will be assimilated
:)

i got it right all along. There are no standards. There is a lot of hype and bad 3D tech. i said that the general adoption rate of S3D would be much slower than gaming and TV would not lead.
- at that was at CES 2010 - when everyone else was caught up in the hype

When S3D works well, it is amazing. There is just not enough of the "wow" factor to make purchasing a 3D TV a priority - not yet. But when there is enough wow to go around, it will be an easy adoption - especially considering that they do have S3D right for handhelds and small portables and it will make a transition to larger screens when the tech is right (and standardized).

I'll be in a walking frame at the aged care nursing home by the time 3D TV takes over.

No idea about the S3D part, but the best part of the olympics so far has been Nick D'Arcy's failure to qualify for his event which means he will be going home early. There is such a thing as Karma, and Nick just recieved a special delivery from it, much to the delight of all decent minded Australians.

This arse-wipe should never have been sent to the Olympics in the first place and belongs in prison.
