i guess Diablo 3 is a success http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-0 ... -view.htmlQuote: Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI), the video- game maker put up for sale by majority owner Vivendi SA (VIV), posted quarterly results that beat analysts’ estimates on gains from its “Skylanders” and “Diablo” titles.
Second-quarter profit, excluding items, totaled 20 cents a share, beating the 12-cent average of 19 analysts’ estimates. Net income fell 45 percent to $185 million, or 16 cents a share, from $335 million, or 29 cents, a year ago, Activision,m the largest U.S. game publisher, said yesterday in a statement. . . .
With a new “World of Warcraft” scheduled for release on Sept. 25, the next “Skylanders” installment and a new “Call of Duty” going on sale later this year, Activision projected full-year sales, excluding changes in deferred revenue, to rise 3.1 percent to $4.63 billion. Analysts estimate $4.59 billion.
Profit, excluding items, will be 99 cents, according to the company, compared with analysts’ estimates of 98 cents. The company previously projected 95 cents and $4.53 billion.
“We think being prudent is the best path, and I think that’s what we’ve done with our guidance,” Chief Financial Officer Dennis Durkin said on a conference call.
For the third quarter, Activision forecasts $690 million in revenue and profit of 7 cents a share, on that basis, compared with analysts’ projections of a 12-cent profit and sales of $730.9 million.
In the past two years, the company has exceeded estimates for profit in every quarter and for sales in all but one, Bloomberg-compiled data show. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... pean-dailyQuote: One of the standout data points from Activision's earnings announcement today was that the company's subscription numbers for World of Warcraft have fallen by more than a million in just the last three months. WoW now stands at just 9.1 million subs, but that isn't making Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime nervous.
Morhaime said on the investors call that it's actually quite normal with each WoW expansion pack for players to drop off. Moreover, this time around, before Blizzard launches the Mists of Pandaria expansion, Blizzard fans were pre-occupied with Diablo III, which Morhaime acknowledged had an impact on WoW as well.
"Historically we have seen usage decline towards the end of an expansion cycle. We saw a similar drop in subscribers in the months before Cataclysm, followed by a substantial return of players around the Cataclysm launch. We're also seeing that a number of players took a break from WoW to play Diablo III," he said.
As for Diablo III, while the game did put up record numbers, it also encountered a number of problems, which are well documented. Morhaime took the opportunity on the investors call to once again address concerns about the state of Diablo III.
"While Diablo III was our 14th #1 seller, we did experience some challenges. Due to the unprecedented influx of players a number of service issues arose that we needed to work around the clock to address. The vast majority of these issues were ironed out within a couple weeks of launch. As I mentioned in a letter to players recently, we're not satisfied with just breaking launch records. We want people to play and enjoy Diablo III for a long time," he said.
"We've already made a number of fixes and updates, including activation of the auction house... and the Diablo team has also been working on improvements to in-game rewards and having a player vs. player mode which we hope will enhance the value and longevity of the game."

Ahh, a confirmation of PvP mode for D3! That, and it needs an expansion. I wonder how long it would take. It only took 1 year for an expansion to come out for D2.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... pean-dailyQuote: A Diablo III player claims to have earned more than $10,000 in real currency since the game was launched.
The player, known only by his pseudonym "WishboneTheDog", answered extensive questions on the feat for the Reddit community, submitting screenshots of PayPal and Auction House transactions as evidence.
While WishboneTheDog wouldn't give precise item descriptions and information on sales and trading techniques, he insisted that the $10,000 total was earned without cheating of any kind, and almost entirely through trading on the game's Real Money and Gold Auction Houses - the only real money invested was the $60 needed to buy the game.
The majority of the person's buying and selling takes place on the game's Gold Auction House: 2,000 transactions, versus 500 transactions on the Real Money Auction House - "The RMAH is merely a way to convert my gold to USD," WishboneTheDog noted.
"I just maintain a balance between value of items and gold. I try to have enough gold/item value to purchase any under-priced item in the game. There are items worth 1.5bil+; I want to be able to purchase them for 600k if necessary."
WishboneTheDog now trades exclusively in "high end" items - nothing worth less than 50 million gold - with the most expensive single item being sold for 1.5 billion gold before Blizzard took its cut. He also observes that Diablo's gold in-game currency is "more easily exchanged" for real money than "90 per cent of the countries in the world."
While Diablo III's in-game economy has slowed since the weeks following its launch, WishboneTheDog expects it to pick up again when PvP is released.

Blizzard Says Battle.net Was Hacked http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/bre ... mpromised/"Blizzard announced Thursday afternoon that its Battle.net service has been comprimised, and there was unauthorized access to some Battle.net account information. In a press release, Blizzard said the unauthorized access included email addresses associated with Battle.net accounts in all regions, outside of China. Additional information from accounts associated with the North American servers. The company stressed that credit card and other customer payment data has not been accessed or affected at this time. Blizzard first detected the intrusion into its network on August 4, but chose not to disclose the information until today. “This week, our security team found an unauthorized and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard,” Blizzard president Mike Morhaime wrote in a blog post. “We quickly took steps to close off this access and began working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate what happened.” Mr. Morhaime claims that Blizzard uses Secure Remote Password protocol (SRP) to secure user’s passwords. SRP uses a password-authenticated key agreement method, which makes it possible for a man-in-the-middle attack to intercept enough information to decrypt the passwords. This also means that passwords should be hashed and salted, but until a hash-dump appears online this cannot be verified."

Patch 1.0.4 PreviewJust a few snippets from the article. Well, we're getting closer to 1.0.4, and while it's still a few weeks away we're going to start hitting you fast and furious with blogs aimed at explaining the upcoming changes. To kick things off, I wanted to provide an overview of some of the larger systems changes and game improvements. Let's get started! So, in 1.0.4 we’re increasing the health of normal monsters by approximately 5%-10% in Inferno, but also increasing the likelihood they drop magic or rare items by a factor of four. We’re correspondingly lowering the health of Champions and Rares by 10-25% and editing specific affixes to shrink the difficulty gap. We’re still working on those numbers, but that’s approximately what we’re shooting for. To further reduce the gap between normal and Elite monsters, we’re adjusting some of the more frustrating monster affixes, such as Fire Chains and Shielding.* Of course there are some normal monsters that are massive spikes in difficulty too, and we’ll be making polish adjustments to a few of those as well, like reducing the damage of two-handed skeletons like Skull Cleavers. See you in-game! *P.S. We’re getting rid of the Invulnerable Minions monster affix.

New Legendary item improvements in upcoming patch.... New Legendary sneak peaksThey Should Feel Unique Many of you commented, rightly, that the Legendary items in the game didn’t feel unique enough. Something that Diablo II did really well was to create some very memorable items, and they were called “Uniques.” While we call them Legendaries now, the word “unique” was something we tried to keep in mind when making these changes. The rarity of Legendary items combined with their color means that when they drop you should feel like you’re getting something special, something that isn’t just another sword. A truly legendary item should have history behind it, something that you can imagine a powerful wizard imbuing with special magics from within the depths of his musty library.
