Thanks for the update; i am glad it settled down and was not fully exploited

yes, too many users disable UAC :P
- Vista has pretty decent security .. and gaming .. and interface

but i guess Win7 will have it all .. Business has to adopt it to replace XP .. or MS is in trouble
- do you think they will succeed .. Win7 "looks" good

Win7 has been pretty good for me so far. For one reason or another I end up repartitioning every 6 months or so (I like to f**k with things to see how they work haha), so I installed Win7 Beta as my primary OS when it was released. I would say its pretty slick so far, very few major issues. Im still trying to figure out WHY it is faster and takes less of a footprint than Vista. One of two thing shappened: either they took sh!t out of Vista, or they made sh!t more efficient. I havent figured out which yet.

Latest count on downadup: 15 million

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/01/25/ ... 232924206/

around the world so far, British experts say.

The Independent on Sunday reported that the worm -- known as Downadup, Conficker or Kido -- had contaminated 6 million PCs in the past three days alone.

The newspaper said more than 3,000 British organizations, including hospitals and the Ministry of Defense, have received the virus.

Officials in Britain, the United States, Russia, China and India say they are waiting to see what the virus's effects will be, if anything.

The newspaper reported there is a possibility the virus has no function other than to demonstrate its originator's skill, but some security experts think it unlikely a worm so sophisticated at this one would have no ulterior purpose.

Tom Gaffney, technical manager of F-Secure, says this could be to capture confidential information, such as online account details and passwords. He said it is likely the worm is a "rootkit," which gives the virus designer administrative access to remote computers.

"it has no function other than to demonstrate its originator's skill"

that IS clever

the threat is worse than the execution

3-18-10New password-stealing virus targets Facebook

Hackers have flooded the Internet with virus-tainted spam that targets Facebook's estimated 400 million users in an effort to steal banking passwords and gather other sensitive information.

The emails tell recipients that the passwords on their Facebook accounts have been reset, urging them to click on an attachment to obtain new login credentials, according to anti-virus software maker McAfee Inc.

If the attachment is opened, it downloads several types of malicious software, including a program that steals passwords, McAfee said on Wednesday.

McAfee estimates that hackers sent out tens of millions of spam across Europe, the United States and Asia since the campaign began on Tuesday.

Dave Marcus, McAfee's director of malware research and communications, said that he expects the hackers will succeed in infecting millions of computers.

"With Facebook as your lure, you potentially have 400 million people that can click on the attachment. If you get 10 percent success, that's 40 million," he said.

The email's subject line says "Facebook password reset confirmation customer support," according to Marcus.
