here is nvidia's PR on the subject (the relevant part any way, it does tend to rattle on a bit).

NVIDIA SLI Multi-GPU Technology Paired With Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition Processors Power World's Fastest Desktop Gaming Platforms

SANTA CLARA, CA, Nov 14, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) --

NVIDIA today announced that system builders worldwide are now shipping the fastest PC gaming platforms ever built, thanks in part to NVIDIA(R) SLI(R) technology and the just-released Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition processors and X79 chipset-based motherboards.

The combination of NVIDIA SLI technology -- which allows for multiple GPUs to run on a single PC -- and new X79-based motherboards allow gamers to customize their PC experience with up to four NVIDIA GeForce(R) GTX GPUs, including the GeForce GTX 580 and GTX 570, the world's fastest DX11 GPUs. Licensed by the world's leading motherboard manufacturers -- including Intel, ASUS, ASRock, EVGA, Foxconn, Gigabyte and MSI, SLI technology is crucial for playing this year's hottest graphics-intensive games, such as the recently released Battlefield 3 and upcoming Batman: Arkham City with detail, resolution and immersion settings cranked up.

Note there is no mention of PCI-e 8x or 16x here, just SLI technology (which exists quite nicely on 1155 platforms) and the new X79 chipset.

My guess is as above, more memory bandwidth keeps the CPU better fed, which in turn keeps SLI better fed. has nothing to do with 8x vs 16x

i got also and ... the press deck from Nvidia
:tease:

They claim good performance increases with Tri-SLI'd GTX 580 with SBE

i'd love to test it out - it would make an interesting article ..
-- i really should ask Intel for 2 CPUs - 2700K also. :P

i'll get busy

Are you allowed to publish the press deck?

No

You will see more about this. i am going to try and get a x79 MB and SB-E CPU and another GTX 580; i give myself one shot in ten of pulling it off.

For myself, i will get a 2500K and OC the heck out of it. That should be sufficient for intensive graphics and CPU architecture comparisons until Ivy Bridge and PileDriver get here.

X79 does not really appear ready for prime time. It is a workstation platform right now.

You didn't really take me seriously, did you?

So much gets lost in communication over the internet. My use of mod powers was 100% for my own amusement and that of others. Please do not take my comments seriously. :)

(ROFLMAO) I should've known that you were too "nice and weak" to do this, since you're.. a Christian! :tease: Just kidding, man!!!!!!!!!!!!! (beer2) :hello:

See, guys.. it's just for the amusement of others, but well he did shorten my life by a few hours by giving me such anxiety! ;-)

Sorry, I'll try to get back on topic! Hmm, looks like I'll be sticking with my X58 rigs until Ivy Bridge comes out!

Hey, wouldn't 16x PCIe 2.0 lanes per card actually start to show some more benefit for 2x GTX 590's in SLI or HD 6990's in XF over 8x lanes?

Let me read it again and get back to you. It could be metaphysical.

Possibly, though I doubt even SB-E really has the grunt needed to make the most of Quad SLI. It takes a LOT of cpu power to get 4 GF110 cores working optimally, the number of lanes is almost irrelevant.

I think there is an opportunity for driver writers to try and take more advantage of cores a game isn't using to help accelerate things like SLI rendering.

Oh yea, as we make more computer games, we're gravitating away from the physical world here on Earth, into "Cyberspace". It's like the 8th stage of life, when the fruit is being created. We are hard at work on creating "external" gameworlds in which there can be "new life", but it's out of this world for it takes us away from ourselves (at least in a sense, the physical attention in this world). Energy is being expended upon creating something external, and then we can participate in them all we want.. like in a dream when we are sleeping. Ever dream that you're in stuck in a game after playing it all day long? Sometimes, too much makes me go nuts, like a song repeating itself in the head! :banghead:

As Apoppin says, we are nearing end-game. Coincidentally, that's what most religious people love to preach.. "Attention, the end is coming!!!!!!!!!" So it must be true? :?:
