It *is* too hot. It *does* clock lower than Sandy Bridge.

It improves over Sandy. 'Hot' is mostly disappointing the AMD employees posting in CPU who were as usual expecting more; and although they all run Intel in their PCs, they look to disparage it as often as possible, hoping for the day that AMD will put out a better performing CPU. Ivy is no failure and it is a fine-tuning of SB

The only SB CPU that i have is Core i3-2105. We can do clock for clock at 3.1GHz

My own expectations were realistic. i stated that if i got 4.5GHz as a minimum on Ivy's OC, i would be satisfied

Well, i got 4.8GHz.

i certainly have no reason to be disappointed and Ivy at 4.8GHz runs MUCH cooler than my Bloomfield i7-920 at 4.2GHz
- and Ivy does it in style, using half the power. And putting out way way less heat.

Ivy is however - AS EXPECTED by reasonable enthusiasts - an incremental increase in CPU power and a near-doubling of CPU-graphics performance over Sandy. i'd like to see AMD's CPUs get that much of an overall boost

absolutely. IB is just a tick in their scheme. Ticks arent aimed at huge leaps but important implements. Intel has been successful going to 22nm trigate. I just dont think the benefits where as huge as expected. But the benefits are there. As far as better, IB is better than SB in every way for the masses. In everyway its better for the normal PC purchaser. As far as enthusiast and overclockers, IB kseries doesnt offer much over SB. As am matter of fact, when both overclocked, they perform very close and use about the same energy. It is not a step backwards at all. Its a good leap for the consumer markets and its an important transition for intels node advantage. It has been very sucessful.

And apoppin 4.8 is awesome. Its really cool. But i think i might go for the older gal SB, she been around a few times and i heard she puts out without much effort. Oh and she is a little cheaper. But i see nothing wrong with IB. The OCing folks has just got to wait a little longer to see the huge jump they be lusting for.

i would have been just as happy to have Sandy as Ivy. We were fortunate to get one from Intel. That said, i think it is cool to have the latest testing platform - for everything!

if they cost the same, i might get IB instead. You can find some killler deals on SB every now and again

Look. I say out of Sandy Bridge vs Ivy Bridge, purchase whatever is cheaper at least for now. There isn't much between them. The only exception to that would be if you don't have a GPU and aren't planning on getting one, then I'd definitely recommend Ivy over Sandy.

As to the heat, it is early days on a novel new manufacturing process (3D transistors). It's still not as hot as Bulldozer nor anywhere near as power greedy, and that is on a last gen traditional process (and AMD plus their foundry can't even get that right!). The last time AMD had a novel new manufacturing process their chips ran very hot too (K7 Thunderbird).

So enough with the FUD already!
