5-20-2012 Robin Gibb dead at 62 from liver cancerBee Gee Robin Gibb succumbed to a longtime struggle with liver cancer Sunday, a spokesperson confirmed. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer was 62. His death dashed the hopes of Bee Gees fans who'd hoped that a miracle was in store after the singer emerged from a coma late last month. Prior to his regaining consciousness, his family had revealed that Gibb had been given only a 10 percent chance of surviving and seemed to be preparing the public for his imminent death. Despite the shock fans are now experiencing, family members surely feel grateful for the month they had with Gibb after his unexpected awakening. Robin follows Maurice (a fellow Bee Gee) and Andy (a solo artist) in death, leaving eldest brother Barry as the sole survivor among the legendary Brothers Gibb. The Bee Gees had officially retired as a group in 2003, following Maurice's passing, although there'd been reports that the remaining two might revive the act as a duo, before Robin fell seriously ill. Disco fans are feeling their mortality this weekend, as the death of one of the principal voices of the 15-times-platinum Saturday Night Fever soundtrack follows the passing of Donna Summer by a mere three days.

6-3-2012 'Desperate Housewives' Star Kathryn Joosten Dies at 72Actress Kathryn Joosten, best known as "Desperate Housewives'" most meddlesome neighbor Karen McKluskey, died Friday after a long battle with lung cancer. She was 72. Joosten's death came less than three weeks after the emotional "Desperate Housewives" series finale, which saw the redemption and eventual death of Mrs. McKluskey as well. Prior to her residence on Wisteria Lane, Joosten had another tony TV address: The White House. She played Mrs. Landingham, President Bartlet's (Martin Sheen) secretary on "The West Wing" for the series' first two seasons until her character died in a car accident. She also had memorable TV roles on "Scrubs," "Joan of Arcadia," "My Name Is Earl," "General Hospital" and "Dharma & Greg." Joosten was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2001. The cancer returned in September 2009. After Joosten underwent surgery and chemotherapy treatments, she was officially declared cancer-free in January 2010. She was an advocate for lung cancer awareness and research, even doing speaking engagements about her battle.

Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowl (all-star game) selection who played for 20 years in the National Football League, was found unconscious at his home by his girlfriend on Wednesday with a gunshot wound to the chest and a revolver nearby, police said. Seau's death at age 43 comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of the effects of repeated blows to the head in football, and the potential for such injuries to contribute to depression and long-term health problems in players. The death was at least the third apparent suicide by a former NFL player since February 2011. Seau, who played for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots after leaving the Chargers, retired after the 2009 season. Gunshot wound to the chest doesn't sound like a suicide to me... I'd think BS on that. Anyways, it's always important to keep up with the physical fitness - slacking off after years (or months) of being in shape could contribute a lot to the depression as the body is used to a better state of well-being. I'm getting back to working out now and stuff.. feels great! Tongkat Ali (the ultimate testosterone-boosting herb/bitter) is helping me gain some of it back so quickly!!

Yeah, I wonder if that would ever lead to the banning of high-impact sports (football, UFC, boxing, etc..) - heck, if steroids are banned in all of those sports, but yet they're very physically damaging anyways - the irony!

6-6-2012 Iconic science fiction writer Ray Bradbury dies at 91Ray Bradbury, the author of classics such as “Fahrenheit 451,” “Something Wicked this Way Comes” and “The Martian Chronicles,” died Tuesday night in Los Angeles at the age of 91. Bradbury began his career writing science fiction for fanzines in 1938 and became a full-time writer in 1943. His major breakthrough as a science fiction writer was the publishing of “The Martian Chronicles” in 1950. The story of the effects of man’s attempt to colonize Mars after a massive nuclear war on Earth, the book reflected the anxieties over nuclear war in the 1950s and the fear of foreign powers. Perhaps his best-known book is “Fahrenheit 451,” which was released in 1953 and tells the story of a professional book-burner who works under a totalitarian government that has outlawed the written word. The main character, Montag, flees for his life after he starts stealing books meant to be burned and falls under the tutelage of a professor out to educate him.

7-3-2012 Andy Griffith dies at 86Actor Andy Griffith, whose portrayal of a small-town sheriff made "The Andy Griffith Show" one of American television's most enduring shows, has died at his North Carolina home. Griffith created another memorable character, the folksy defense lawyer in "Matlock" in the 1980s and '90s, but it was his portrayal of Sheriff Andy Taylor on the "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 1960s that gave him a place in U.S. television history. The show portrayed life in the friendly, slow-moving fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina, which was widely believed to have been based on Griffith's own hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina.
