You're considering a CPU socket a standard?
I don't like closed standards. It's nothing against nVidia. They just happen to be one of the worst culprits with their CUDA, C for Graphics, and now this.
And nvidia were one of the main designers of OpenCL to give this sort of tech (OpenCL is basically early CUDA & GPU C) to other GPU vendors. AMD/ATI as per usual sat on their fat arses and didn't do squat to develop OpenCL. They are happy to exploit it nowadays though!
