Nvidia's back in the chipset business .. i guess AMD is going to compete with them instead of Intel
:)

Quote:
NVIDIA today announced that the NVIDIA(R) Icera(R) 410 LTE multimode data modem chipset for tablets and clamshell devices has been tested and validated for operation on the AT&T 4G LTE network.

AT&T qualification tests help ensure that product manufacturers can confidently select chipsets that integrate with connected devices and can quickly achieve final product qualification.

"Validation with AT&T is an achievement that paves the way for NVIDIA Icera-powered LTE devices on the AT&T network through this year and next," said Stan Boland, senior vice president of Mobile Communications at NVIDIA.

The NVIDIA Icera 410 LTE modem delivers lightning-fast web browsing, video streaming and multiplayer gaming to tablets and clamshell devices. It is the first Icera modem to implement 4G LTE in NVIDIA's software defined radio baseband processor. Together with its multimode radio transceiver, the chipset offers 4G LTE at category 2 data rates (up to 50 Mbps) as well as 4G HSPA+, 3G and 2G compatibility.

This is a very big deal for nvidia. As good as Tegra 3 is the reason you don't see it more phones is because they were late to integrate 4g into there chipset. All major carriers want 4g capabilities on there top of the line phones and because Tegra wasn't able they lost lots of contracts (for example the HTC One line of phones. I don't think this will effect AMD much tho.

The only reason i mentioned AMD, is because they are looking to break into smartphones also. They have to put something amazing together to compete with Nvidia which is a few years ahead of them.

AMD does have good opportunities with ultra-light notebooks as their APUs have got much more energy efficient. i am looking forward to see what Nvidia brings with Project Denver (Jensen said it was going well at the GTC but refused to discuss it)

It's truly amazing when you think about how quickly Nvidia was able to produce a very capable mobile prosessor and become a real player in the smartphone tablet market. In just a few years Nvidia's Tegra 3 can go toe to toe with titans like Samsung and Qualcomm. A testament to how good there engineering is (gj).

They where also bright enough to know they weren't going to get anywhere without integrating there own radio into there chipset. Buying Icera will pay huge dividends in the near future.

i have to agree. Being at the GTC shows that Nvidia has incredible Vision - and it is unified across all markets including for gaming.. They are ahead of the cloud and their new Kepler architecture supports it directly. They own the professional market despite having "proprietary" CUDA; and it is only increasing in importance.

Nvidia can spin on a dime and are quicker to respond than any of their competitors. Like Intel, they give incredible support to their customers and partners and do not wait for open source to "produce something" on its own. They do not hesitate to invest their own money into promising tech.

I expect very big things out of Tegra 4. If Nvidia is smart, they will make a dual-core Tegra 4 chip for phones, and a quad-core for super phones, tablets, and notebooks. I really want to see them beef up their graphics performance and take a clear lead in gpu performance among tablets. I will likely get my wife the transformer TF300 for christmas, but I am will hold off on getting myself a tablet until Tegra 4 and it's competition is out.
