we are expecting 19x12, aren't we ?

. . imo the only real competition to it is the monitors that have it "built in" - no glasses needed; evidently Nvidia's glasses are the best of what is available

Aside from that EVGA loner program which i don't ever really expect to participate in, i don't see Kiosks and demonstrations at retail outlets; aside from buying it - and returning it if you are dissatisfied and paying $100 restocking fee, there isn't any way to see it unless you are lucky to have a friend like Rollo living nearby

which makes me curious, Rollo ..

Has any of your friends bought it because of seeing yours? .. and you never mention your teenage son
- i would have a hard time playing StereoVision myself if i had a PC game-playing teenager in the house

Believe it or not, none of my friends are very into gaming. The ones who are play on Wii's with their kids. Everyone who has seen it thinks it's pretty amazing though.

My son has his own computer, but no 3d Vision. He has to make do with 19X12 ATM, although I'm thinking of giving him my 3007WFP-HC or buying him that new Viewsonic monitor. He likes the 3d, but isn't as married to it as I am.

I read somewhere that you can hack this 3D Vision stuff for free and use 50-cent 3D glasses.

I also read that the effects are underwhelming.

BFG- this actually brings us to a common ground. I've been trying to replay old games I enjoyed in real 3d because it doesn't seem like I'm playing "Space Invaders" now. So I've changed my position 100% on whether old games need to be catered to with drivers, I see the need now.

Cool, I guess we both agree that:

  1. New hardware can enhance old games.
  2. Both IHVs have a requirement to maintain a reasonable effort to ensure backwards compatibility.

What you’re experiencing with your 3D glasses (i.e. revitalized old games) is something I experience every time I upgrade my GPU. First I’ll benchmark to see the performance gains, then I’ll spend hours testing and tinkering with new settings that I can run as a result of the upgrade.

It should also be worth noting that in the last 6 months nVidia has really gotten their act together with respect to drivers. I have 90+ games installed (some as old as ten years) and I’m at the stage where I can basically throw a dart at a wall to randomly pick one, start playing it, and basically get a flawless gaming experience.

As an example, the last two games I finished were Elite Force 2 (six years old) and Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30 (four years old), and now I’m finishing another six year old game (MoH: Breakthrough). After that it’s time for something a bit more modern: Fallout 3. This is on a high-end video card released in 2008 (GTX260+).

Yep, now they just need to hit higher resolutions and bigger display sizes.

You should read up on the difference between the methods of getting the 3d effect SickBeast, so you can discuss it more intelligently than comparing anaglyph to shutter glasses.

Here's where it came from:

http://www.dailyhack.net/2009/02/free-3 ... -hack.html

it is a "hack"

BFG you would experience that revitalization on a level you never imagined possible if you picked up 3d Vision, and you'd have a slightly bigger monitor with no eyestrain or geometry issues whatsoever.

With the higher resolutions you speak of, the 40% performance hit of 3D Vision would pretty much require SLi in some new games, it would definitely make graphics choices more limited.

Your GTS260C216 would do pretty well by itself at 16X10. :)

it *has* been noted ... and it is much appreciated
- you can pass that on to Focus Group, Rollo .. with thanks

i still heard nothing from EVGA's loner program; it'll be 'awhile' before i get my hands on it
- BFG could get by with just a pair of the glasses; i would need to run 10x7 [or less; i don't remember] to get 120hz on my old CRT
:P

Do you guys have the requisite DVI input on your CRTs?

i don't; mine is budget

.. i wouldn't want to preview it at a lower than 16x10 resolution, anyway .. a GTX280 should do nicely
- i really want to see it with PhysX ,, so i kept my old 8800GTX for use as a 2nd GPU [i hope to explore it by itself in an upcoming review - but there is so much to do]
- so i am pretty much resigned to waiting .. i got in on the EVGA program within minutes of it being announced [the instant i got the email - which i saw coming in - i jumped] .. so i'm probably a thousand down on their list :tease:

"the only thing that matters" does not seem to be gaining any traction
- i don't see 3D anywhere

am i not looking in the right places?
- Ghostbusters should look great in 3-D :tease:
