Tax cuts for the rich has proven to do nothing for the economy.

1-25-2009 Pelosi: GOP ideas judged by ability to create jobs

WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is defending the Democratic plan to revive the economy and says Republican proposals will be judged by how well they create jobs.

Republicans are seeking tax help for small businesses and for some home buyers, and lowering some income tax rates.

Pelosi, D-Calif., says such ideas will be judged by their ability to create jobs, their cost and their ability to help turn around the economy.

President Barack Obama plans to meet with Republicans this week on the stimulus plan. The House could vote on the $825 billion proposal after that meeting at the Capitol.

Pelosi describes the economy as "dark, darker, darkest almost." She says Democrats have listened to economists and believe that new spending will create more jobs that would tax cuts.

1-25-2009 McCain will not vote for stimulus as it stands now

WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain says it will take some big changes before he would vote for the Obama administration's stimulus package

The Arizona Republican, who calls himself a member of the loyal opposition, says he can't vote for the proposal as it is now written. For one, he doesn't think it would do enough to put people back to work.

The former GOP president nominee also says he will push to make permanent the Bush tax cuts, which helped high-earning people. Those cuts expire next year and President Barack Obama has said he would not seek to renew them.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

The massive numbers keep rolling in

1-26-2009 Caterpillar cuts 20,000 jobs

Caterpillar Inc said on Monday that quarterly earnings fell more than 32 percent and warned of a tough year ahead as the downturn that began in the United States metastasized into a full-blown global recession that hit sales of its earth-moving equipment.

Caterpillar and other makers of bulldozers, dump trucks and excavators have suddenly faced a world of challenges, including a drop in spending by their well-heeled energy and mining customers.

"We knew Caterpillar was going to be a disaster." said Eli Lustgarten, an analyst at Longbow Research. "We just didn't know the magnitude of it. And it's ugly."

30,000 job cuts announced today so far between Catapillar, Pfizer and Home Depot

1-26-2009 Home Depot to cut 7,000 jobs, close Expo chain

Home Depot Inc. plans to eliminate 7,000 jobs while closing four dozen stores under its smaller home improvement brands as the recession continues to batter the nation's housing market.

Most of the cuts affect workers at Home Depot's 34 Expo Design Centers, five YardBIRDS, two Design Centers and HD Bath, a bath remodeling business with seven sites.

Those stores will close in the next two months.

Home Depot's plans also include 2,000 cuts to non-store jobs, including 500 workers in its corporate headquarters, while freezing the pay of its officers.

43,000 jobs cut today as of 10 am

1-26-2009 Sprint Nextel to eliminate 8,000 jobs

Sprint Nextel Corp. is eliminating about 8,000 positions in the first quarter as it seeks to cut annual costs by $1.2 billion.

The nation's third-largest wireless provider said Monday it will complete the layoffs, which comprise about 14 percent of its 56,000 employees, largely by March 31.

The company said it is also suspending its 401(k) match for the year, extending a freeze on salary increases and is suspending a tuition reimbursement program.

Sprint spokesman James Fisher said the company is still deciding where the job cuts will come from but said officials will likely avoid significant reductions in its customer service and network quality divisions, where the company has focused on improvement in recent years.

Fisher also said the company will continue reviewing its internal operations to see if there are functions it would consider jettisoning in the future. Whether that leads to outsourcing, which some industry analysts have expected for months, is unknown.

1-26-2009 GM to lay off 2,000 workers, cut production

DETROIT – General Motors Corp. said Monday it will cut 2,000 jobs at plants in Michigan and Ohio, and it will halt production for several weeks at nine U.S. plants over the next six months due to slow sales.

About 1,200 workers will be laid off at the Michigan plant, while 800 jobs will be cut in Ohio.

Shares of GM fell 7 cents, or 2 percent, to $3.42 in midday trading.
