- what did we lose since November when it really started to accelerate?

According to the numbers below at least 10 million Americans are out of work.

I said the Bush Administration was hiding the numbers for years and it's clear now how much they were hiding.

Sadly Republicans such as Rush and Hannity and their anti-American supporters started claiming it wa all Obama's fault long before he took office 10 days ago.

Republicans are already calling for impeachment.

1-29-2009 Record 4.8 million Americans get unemployment benefits

WASHINGTON — A record 4.8 million people were collecting unemployment benefits in mid-January, the government said in a week in which firms announced layoffs totaling tens of thousands, suggesting the number of Americans out of work is climbing rapidly.

About 588,000 workers applied for jobless benefits last week, up 3,000 from the prior week and 61% higher than a year ago, the Labor Department said. The seasonally adjusted 4.8 million people who were collecting benefits in the week ended Jan. 17, the latest available data, was the largest since the government began keeping track in 1967.

The number of U.S. workers has grown in the last four decades. But another gauge, the insured unemployed rate, which measures the portion of people who are collecting benefits out of the eligible working population, rose from 3.4% to 3.6%, the highest since August 1983, when the unemployment rate was 9.5%.

Only 37% of those who are out of work are collecting unemployment benefits, the National Employment Law Project estimates. The rest have either exhausted their benefits or are not eligible to receive aid based on their work history.

The NELP says 3.5 million workers exhausted their benefits in 2008, and an additional 2.1 million will run out of benefits during the first half of 2009.

WTF? Where the hell did you get this? Although I agree layoffs are a major issue, this kind of vitriol is unbecoming of an adult. It's just as partisan of a bullshit comment you claim the right makes. Congrats! Youre the polar opposite!

11-5-2008 'Impeach Obama' groups pop up on Facebook

Barack Obama has not even been sworn in yet as the 44th president of the United States but groups are springing up online calling for his impeachment.
On Facebook, an "Impeach Barack Obama" group has attracted more than 700 members and a lively debate about the Democrat's election victory on Tuesday over Republican John McCain.

Another Facebook group of the same name has 160 members and urges others to join because "we might as well get a head start on the impeachment of Obama."

"There are a lot of Americans out there that do not fully understand the concept of Socialism or Communism which is why they've elected Obama as president," it says.

Yet another Facebook group, "Impeach Barack Hussein Obama," has 160 members.

It decries that Obama "has voiced support for various unconstitutional programs such as the assault weapons ban, universal healthcare, and various schemes for wealth distribution."

"What are we going to do about it? IMPEACH HIM!" it says.

Obama still has some way to go, however, to equal the number of "Impeach George Bush" groups on Facebook, which lists at least 95 such groups with varying membership.

Obama is to be sworn into office on January 20, 2009. He will be the first African-American president of the United States.

2-2-2009 Macy's to cut 7,000 jobs, slash dividend

NEW YORK – Macy's Inc. announced Monday that it will eliminate 7,000 jobs, almost 4 percent of its work force, and cut capital spending, reduce its contributions to its employees' retirement funds and slash its dividend to preserve cash amid a severe pullback in consumer spending.

Macy's announced last month — on the heels of the worst holiday shopping season in decades — that it would close 11 stores, affecting 960 employees. The company expects the additional actions announced Monday to lower its annual selling, general and administrative expenses about $400 million per year starting in 2010.

Also as part of the restructuring, Macy's central buying, planning and senior management and marketing functions will be located primarily in New York.

Corporate-related businesses functions such as finance, human resources, legal, property development and company purchases will be located primarily in Cincinnati.

The localization began last year as the company struggled with disappointing sales in some markets where the Macy's name replaced a local favorite as the company absorbed May Department Stores Co. in 2005.

No breakdown of how many in the U.S.

2-4-2009 Japan's Panasonic to cut 15,000 jobs, shut plants

Panasonic Corp. said Wednesday it will slash as many as 15,000 jobs and shut 27 plants worldwide, joining a slew of major Japanese companies announcing deep cuts as the global slowdown batters the world's second-largest economy.

The company said it has 230 production sites around the world but declined to give a regional breakdown.
