Is there anything out there on par or close to a Velociraptor in terms of speed and reliability at a lower cost?

I don't need tons of storage like most people..... Around 300gb is the sweet spot, since I'm only using 63gb of the 300 available at the moment. Hey, I get rid of sh!t I don't need. Nice and tidy.
Looking to spend $120. or less.

Maxtor is out of the question :-q :banghead:

The new seagate 500GB 7200.12 or the Samsung F3 drives should be the closest in terms of performance.

Even if there was a 100% rebate ?

You know, Maxtor 'bates

seriously, i think they are OK now; there was a bad run awhile back .. people say the same things about some WD HDs and Hitachi, also, i believe

For me, Seagate has been fast and reliable. They are pretty cheap also. If you do video, then you need at least 1 TB of storage; if not, you can get by with way less. i *need* a minimum of 250 GB just for my apps and games.

i doubt anyone really needs the 10,000 RPM drives; they really aren't that much faster than the newer 7200 RPM drives ... and if you really need speed, catch a STD

i mean buy a SSD

incidentally, i have a hard drive lined up soon. probably will be up before next week.

Comparing WD250AAKS (oldest), WD6400AAKS (older), Seagate 7200.12 (Newest)

So you should get a pretty good idea of the performance increase in 3-4 years.

Looking forward to that one Karan, I have a WD6400AAKS (partitioned) as my main OS drive.
I also have a WD 250GB, that I used before (now just for storage (or partition for secondary OS)). I'm not sure though if it is the AAKS version though.

Right now I need more space, so I was considering getting a 1.5TB drive but depending on how fast that new Seagate 500GB is, I might switch to that as my OS drive and use up the space i have on my 640GB for storage.

Can't wait for that review!! :good:
