Can't say anything about Hitachi HDDs as i have never used it or seen anyone use 'em but i own 2 ST31500341AS 1.5TB drives and they even though are fast run very hot and loud even when idle.

are we near bottom or will 2 TB performance HDs be sub-$100 this year?

i can wait; my 250 GB HDs are still sufficient for my current games and i have plenty of storage in my 2 external drives

Nothing beats this one in performance though...even faster than Caviar Blacks,brilliant write performance. and man look at the price..if they were available here i would buy half a dozen of these.

I love my samsung spinpoint drive. Could be one of the greatest drives made. IIRC it's the first 500gb platter 2TB drive made.
