.... to the processor of the decade

Quite simple really

Cut the price in half and give a free CPU water cooler with it

:D

Think about it

And yet no company has ever dared to do this with a product - except HP with their Tablet for $99
- and they discontinued it :P

:hello:

Sorry, but I still wouldn't purchase it. It'd be like buying one of those Eastern Block cars with a paper mache body and a glorified 2 stroke lawn mower engine.

Simply, there are superior alternatives to BullDozer on the market and you would be foolish not to purchase those instead.

And that is before you consider your power bill. The cost of power has risen here 13% and will rise again at least 20% in the next twelve months. (Because of the Carbon Tax and despite the fact that Tasmania generates 95% of its electricity from green, clean hydro power).

i know you wouldn't - but my post wasn't directed toward you. Or to any other haters.

The actual costs difference between using SB vs BD is pretty small to the overall annual power bill.

The problem is, can AMD afford to sell Bulldozer for $100? Probably not if you listen to the rumors about the low yields, not to mention all the R&D that went into the thing.

In its current form, Bulldozer is dead on arrival. Hopefully TSMC can build the thing and AMD can work some magic with a serious respin.

I wouldn't be surprised if they can cut 50 watts from the TDP. The problem is that Bulldozer is inherently inefficient, just as the P4 was. There's only so much fat that they can trim out.

BTW most people are afraid of putting water inside their computer (for good reason IMO).

Truth be told AMD can afford to give them away.

The question is, can they afford not to
:)

And i don't necessarily mean "give" them away, but make a big gesture to the enthusiast community

I think they have already made their "big gesture" to the enthusiast community......

As for ordinary consumer, they are in love with i3/i5/i7 laptops and who can blame them with bargains like this? (a lot of laptop for the money)

http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XC7948/ ... k-notebook

May even get one for myself despite it being an Acer. I could care less that the only graphics are the integrated intel GPU, the laptop isn't for gaming anyway and the Turion TL-56 @ 1.80 ghz is really beginning to show its age.

That there are years of R&D to recoup? (note: response to 4 core bulldozer pricing which prompted "what are AMD thinking?!")

Recouping past investments is one thing, but really what they are doing when selling above-cost is attempting to generate a cashflow that can sustain today's R&D on tomorrow's product.

Bulldozer was paid for on the back of Phenom I and II profits (as in gross margins, not net profits).

But Piledriver, steamroller, and excavator is entirely dependent on AMD"s cash reserves and cash flow. That is why they can't afford to sell Zambezi for $80. It would be a death sentence for their CPU R&D.

Can you explain why what Idontcare posted is nonsense please?

IDC's comments apply to Intel.

AMD actually is not is such a bad position with FX so that they have to discount it - at all. Evidently they are selling all they can make. It might not have been such a big run anyway; this really does remind me of 2900XT launch.
