It's certainly very tempting. Makes me want to get rid of the Phenom II 965 altogether, replace it with my 2600K/Asrock board and build a 3770K replacement.

Z68 socket 1155 boards could support IVB? Or not? YESSS!!! My mobo is the P8Z68-V/Gen3 http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/sho ... d-PCIe-3.0

Yes, most Z68 boards will support Ivy Bridge. You just won't have native PCI-e 3 (will be interesting to see if the PCI-e 3 ready Z68 boards out there really can do PCI-e 3 with IB in them).

What I mean is, why would the act of dropping in an IVB CPU into my board (for example) render PCI-e 3.0 ineffective? What would spur on this line of thinking. I'm sure I missed something somewhere.

Well, the chicken (z68 boards with chips that claim to allow PCI-e 3 to work) came into being well before the egg (Ivy bridge). The PCI-e logic lives on Ivy Bridge (the CPU), not the motherboard. That makes the egg way more important than the chicken. Those extra chips on Z68 will only properly enable PCI-e 3 if they are fully compatible with Ivy Bridges PCI-e 3 implementation.

My ASRock z68 Extreme3 Gen3 is supposed to have native PCIe 3 and USB 3.0 support with a BIOS update and a IB drop in http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?M ... me3%20Gen3Quote: Features Next-Gen PCI-E 3.0 Support
By adapting PCI-E 3.0 quick switch IC onboard, the ASRock motherboards can support the Next-Gen PCI-E 3.0! PCI Express 3.0 can maximize the bandwidth for the next-gen PCI Express 3.0 VGA cards, provide ultimate graphics performance. The issue is that i don't know when the BIOS update will come i might be picking up a new MB on Monday here's the most economical that i can find with PCIe X8/x8/x4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813138355Is it x16 with only one PCIe slot populated

That's the promise, who knows if it will actually work?
I had the choice of taking the Asrock motherboard I have now, without PCI-e 3 support or waiting several days for stock of the same board but with PCI-e3 support built on, like yours. I chose to get take the non PCI-e one. I've been building computers way too long to take claims of future compatibility very seriously particularly when the part concerned has no control over said compatibility.
