Sure, I'll take this lawn mower built from the iron and aluminum deposits found in 253 Mathilde for a mere eleventy bazillion quintillion bucks. Plus tax.

Come on. If they can barely enable the space shuttle re-entry without burning up (usually) how are they going to make it possible to grant entry to a 100 tons of iron ore and make it profitable? Not with today's technology they can't. Was the space elevator ever considered to be something that was possible? or did it defy physics? Hmmm.

What if a pre-cursor to mining the asteroids was a space facility that turned out single use landers (either glider or parachute) to bring the ore back to earth?

Actually the metals would be processed on an OPS (Orbital Processing Station) and shuttled via re-usable cargo ships that splash down in the ocean.

These guys have been doing their homework.

Since NASA is no longer hiring Rocket Scientists, private firms have been snatching them up.
