The first session starts at 9AM and the press had sweet rolls and fruit available for breakfast. Sadly no bagels and creme cheese but plenty of coffee and teas are available. Glad i brought my own organic black tea; Lipton tea sucks.

Jensen came by the press lounge with a hearty good morning to all and he looks energized (has anyone seen him look down or tired? Curious).

Anyway. the first session i am attending is "real time fire simulation for video games" - Pixar's Chris Horwath and Nvidia's Simon Green are the speakers. Then i have a choice between attending a DNA sequencing alignment program or heading back to my room for 1/2 hour.


i also need to be early to make sure that i get seats for Jensen's keynote at 10:30, so i will show up there at 10AM

i'll take some pics of the GTC and i also need to buy a mouse. i brought the Genius mouse but forgot the charging cable

The first presentation on Fire rendering was way too short! Everybody also showed up pretty late; i used the video cam to record the demo

What i discovered that i need. BATTERIES. i ran back to recharge my two digi-cams for Jensen's Keynote
- also, i did not pack a tripod. Very bad.


i ran into Theo Valich in the elevator of the Marriott. He said he is glad to be back at Nvidia's GTC
-- i'll catch up with him later. i'm heading to Jensen's keynote early. With a 16GB SD memory card and another one for the press conference.

The Keynote is at 10:30. It's ten now, the batteries are recharged and i'm off to Jensen's keynote

The keynote was great and the Q&A session afterward with the press was OK.

Jensen didn't call on me so i had to ask my question later of Nick Stamm

i asked when we will see "Big Kepler" in gaming
- got the expected answer also


i also got the low down on computing with Kepler and the "why" the HD 7970 beats it in compute many benches. There will be a K-120 "GTX 690" (dual GPU GK104) version for Tesla and Quadro available shortly (single precision) and Big Daddy Kepler (GK-110 based 7.1 billion transistor Tesla/Quadro) with dual precision in Q4

What was the answer you got for big Kepler in gaming? "When it's ready"????

The best i can do is that it will be after Tesla and Quadro models.

The impressions that i am getting is that 28nm supply is still very constrained. And Nvidia is is absolutely no hurry to release a gaming chip to beat the GTX 690. What i heard is that it will be Nvidia's top gaming GPU for the next 6-9 months.
-- of course, with such a mediocre offering from Nvidia's competitor and no real chance of a refresh, Southern Islands is next year. So it is logical that Nvidia's next gaming chip will be next year - after the Q4 release off K-220; big k for Tesla.

Evidently the GTX 6x0 is selling well and the demand is exceeding the supply - even with the GTX 670. The impressions that i got is that if TSMC could produce *double* the amount of chips, it would still not be enough for the immediate demand.

i also understand that these issues are getting better and will get better over time, but it is logical that a 7.1 Billion transistor chip will also be in short supply when it is released and the first ones will be reserved for Quadro and Tesla.

So ... 6-9 months ..
