Hobbit is going to be filmed in 4K and also in 3D for double the storage requirements. All lot of what Andy talks about is addressed in Nvidia's cloud and i will try to cover it in the main article.
And as far as something to replace the SSD and blow it away in every metric is FusionIO Storage - a PCIe 3.0 add-in board with super low latency that is just introduced at about $2500 (IO-FX) for servers (and you can use them in parallel), down from $14000 last year. The movie industry is starting to adopt them for this kind of massive data manipulation

Later on this year, it should become available to gamers and home PC enthusiasts. Maximum bandwidth and super-low latency - instant loading of levels.

And if it is successful, it will become much more reasonably priced.
