That is a pretty good price for the FTW version. There must be a lot of margin for the partners to cut prices so soon. How much are HD 7950s going for on sale?

People were PM'ing with Memory Express and getting them even cheaper as well.

I suspect this would be one the cards EVGA had RMA'd to them that had whatever issue it was that caused EVGA to replace some cards with others.

They have likely fixed whatever the fault was and want to make some money at least off of the cards.

Supposedly the new Tahiti chips will be running at the 1100mhz speed AND at a lower voltage. So it is possible the power consumption will remain unchanged. An 1100mhz hd7970 should end up, on average, a very scant few percent faster than the gtx680, but at this point it's moot. The majority of hd7970 owners already run their card at 1100mhz or higher. It's just not an exciting product release. It is akin to Intel releasing the i7-2700k. Nobody really cared, the i5-2500k and i7-2600k had already been on the market a long time and the speed bump wasn't noticeable better.

I think the more interesting discussion is the conundrum of what / how Nvidia will be able to do to GK104 to improve it a la GF104 -> GF114. Increasing cores speeds alone results in diminishing returns because of the bandwidth constraints. I don't think they could add and integrate another 64-bit memory controller onto the chip's die in a reasonable time frame that would be expected for a refresh. 7000mhz gddr5 seems like the only viable option, but how abundant is gddr5 @ 7000mhz? Are there any products that even use it and run it at that speed?

Were there any products that used 6000mhz DDR5 prior to GK104? Sometimes you have to be the innovator, in nvidia's case innovation tends to be more "often times" than "sometimes".

AMD needs 1100MHz to catch the stock GTX 680

How do you know there will be a GK114 to replace the high end? There is only so much you can do with 256-bit and we do have the GK110 coming. Perhaps all of the high end and upper-midrange is going to based on it while GK114 is simplified for the midrange. Unclear to me what to expect. Nvidia is not expecting anything faster than overclocked HD 7970 this year from AMD.
