I just found an awesome laptop at a thrift store, but it's missing the battery and a hard drive.. with both, it'd be worth way over $250.. for only $80, in superb condition! I tested it with my friend's Vertex4 SSD and everything looks great.

However it only supports SATA-1 (made in 2007, I think). It's this model: http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsup ... eId=321957

So, SATA-1 would be too slow for any SSD out there, right? I'm thinking that Seagate Momentus XT 500GB would be the best choice, and they go for as low as $60 on Ebay. It's probably more reliable anyways than old SSD's - except for the Intel ones, which still run around expensive - and it's nice to have at least 500GB of room... heck, I've filled 500GB drives since 2006.

You answered your own question. Thanks for posting!
:D

The 500GB Seagate Momentus has been on Newegg for $80 $70 recently as a hot deal.

Sucks that it just expired on Newegg, and is now $90... it actually performs on the same level as the 10000rpm 300GB Velociraptor overall, while having 200 more GB.
