"Steam has published the results of its June 2012 hardware and software survey, providing some interesting -- albeit hardly surprising -- views at the technology people using Valve’s digital distribution platform are relying on. When it comes to CPUs, for example, Intel is the undisputed leader with 72% usage compared to AMD’s 28%. Almost half of Steam users have dual-core processors, while 38% are running quad-core parts, a 3.1% increase over the last 18 months according to the data.

When it comes to graphics cards, 47% of the surveyed computers were using an Nvidia GPU, while 35% used AMD and as much as 11% used Intel’s integrated graphics chips. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 was the single most popular card followed by the Intel HD Graphics 3000. That may seem surprising but actually Intel makes up for three of the five top GPUs -- Nvidia and AMD are segmented into many more models."
So at least 11% of the the steam users are not playing graphic intensive games, very interesting indeed.

I don't know how much trust you can place in that survey with anomalies such as quad core cpu's being at 46.24% (ahead of dual core on 44.84%) in Feb, then mysteriously being way down from that every other month.

It does say that 6 core cpu's (Phenom II's basically) are only around 2.5% of the total survey and that is consistent, which should tell you something about the forum shills constantly talking about their 6 core phenom II's whenever AMD vs intel comes up.........

There are a lot of mobile users that play casual or older games. HD 4000 can handle DX11 at a low resolution and low/med detail setting.

It certainly seems to have its share of errors. However, it is the largest regular survey of gamers and it is worth considering.

You have to look at DX11 GPUs to see the latest series. Evidently HD 7950 and 7870 are pretty unpopular among the HW surveyed. GTX 680 and 670 are shown as having more videocards in the survey than 79x0 despite AMD's 2-1/2 months lead time to market.
-- and i see why AMD dropped support for HD 4000 series (basically :P ) - DX9 GPUs make up less than 5% of those surveyed.

Indeed I added up all the main desktop cards that get talked about in the forums -- 4890, 4870, 4850, 4670, then added the 3000 series for good measure -- 3870, 3850, 3650.

The total percentage was 9.66%

Then I added GTX295, 280, 260, GTX9800, GTS250

The total percentage was 12.65%

and if I add in the GTS240, that every forum denizen "knows" was pointless and everyone "hated" the total percentage becomes 14.66%

>:)

Note no mobile figures in any of that, just the regular desktop addin/oem cards.

Let's get right to the numbers, starting with CPUs. Unsurprisingly, Intel dominates, with a 72% slice of the pie. Almost exactly half of Steam users have dual-core CPUs, while 38% are running quads. The number of single-core users (7.5%) is more than double the number with greater than four cores.

On the graphics front, 47% of Steam users are running an Nvidia GPU. 36% have a Radeon under the hood, and 11% are stuck with Intel integrated graphics. The remaining 6% are filed under an "other" category that seems to have popped up in the last four months or so. I wonder if Virtu configurations or beta graphics drivers could be responsible for some of that total.

If we drill down into the graphics numbers, we see that Nvidia's GeForce GTX 560 is the most popular GPU of the DirectX 11 generation. Its 10% share is notably higher than that of the next closest rival, the GeForce GTX 460, which sits at just under 6%. There's only one AMD GPU in the top six: the Radeon HD 5770, which sits in third place at a little less than 5%.

Mid-range cards dominate the top of the standings, which should come as no surprise considering 95% of folks have their desktop resolution set at 1920x1080 or lower. DirectX 11 GPUs have the largest share, though, with over 41% to DirectX 10's 37%.

There are a few interesting Windows software statistics in the mix, as well. 63% of users have Firefox installed, but less than 12% are running Chrome. Also, there are nearly as many folks running iTunes (31%) as there are with μTorrent installed (29%).
