Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - SteelCrysis - 04-29-2016 http://www.extremetech.com/computing/227523-intel-kills-upcoming-smartphone-and-tablet-hardware Argh. RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - dmcowen674 - 04-30-2016 Everyone kept saying AMD was the one in trouble, looks like Intel is in a whole lot worse shape. RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - SickBeast - 04-30-2016 The problem is that Intel never offered a compelling tablet/smartphone chip. Their performance was always pretty good but the devices with Intel CPUs always had really bad battery life. This is too bad, though. Most if not all of the cheap Chinese Windows 10 tablets use Intel Atom CPUs and they are actually great devices. I really do think that x86 is at a big disadvantage in mobile applications because it has higher power consumption. This guy says he talked to intel and they only scrapped a current gen chip, still working on 5G: http://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickmoorhead/2016/04/28/intels-new-strategy-is-the-right-one-for-the-company/#1cb854d42313 RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - SickBeast - 05-01-2016 No, it clearly says that they are moving out of mobile. Completely. The only glimmer of hope is that they are suggesting that their newer CPUs will be low power to the point that they will be usable in some tablets like the Surface. But it really looks like Intel is doing this primarily so they can earn much higher margins on the CPUs they sell. It looks like they were selling the Atom chips at a loss. I see what you mean: http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/INTC/news Quote: and 5G (where Intel hopes to lead) a priority for its connectivity efforts. Quote:Aicha Evans, the Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) exec in charge of the company's wireless modem and radio chip engineering teams, has been convinced by CEO Brian Krzanich to withdraw her resignation Quote:. It also comes amid expectations Intel's XMM 7360 4G modem, among the products overseen by Evans, will be used within some iPhone 7 units. Yep, it is clear intel is abandoning all mobile ventures. Will probably look to make an octo core cpu.... RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - SickBeast - 05-02-2016 Rollo you just like to argue and strut around thinking you're always right. I'm outta here. I'm outta here. I don't care if intel leaves the mobile market, or if I'm right. I subscribe to seeking alpha, got an article about this issue that said the move to discontinue 4G parts that are late to market and too costly was being misinterpreted by the rest of the press. Said they're going to regroup and focus on apple mobile and 5g. So I posted that I don't know if I believe intel is leaving mobile based on that article and the above quotes. The market is going mobile, intel has one of the best fabs in the world, and I believe they're regrouping for that huge market rather than pretending it's 1995. Kind of a conflict-of-interest to the market, if Intel has octa-core processors in phones and tablets, while laptops i3's, i5's, and i7's still feature only 2 physical cores. Hopefuly Intel doesn't go the way of Blockbuster when people start realizing that paying $350 for a Skylake or Kaby Lake quad-core processor, or $500 for a dual-core Core i7 6500U for a laptop hardly makes sense. Excuse me, $393 for dual-core Core i7 6600U, as of Sept 2015. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i7-6600U-Notebook-Processor.149429.0.html Intel realizes the need to regroup, lest its line-up of CPUs start to backfire with amassing conflict-of-interest sparking here and there, spreading like a wildfire and eradicating the so-called "premium pricing" strategy in the face of AMD's 16-core Zen available for $300, 8-core 15W laptop CPUs for $250, etc.. while it wasn't Intel's strategy to feature octa-core CPUs in smartphones like Qualcomm started to do. Most people like "moar cores", after all - but Intel just didn't want people to be wondering why their phones/tablets had an 8-core Intel CPU while the $1000 laptop has only 2 cores. Like, Blockbuster didn't want people to start wondering why they should go to Blockbuster stores to rent movies, if there were kiosks everywhere like Redbox's, or mail rentails and online streaming service featuring thousands of movies like Netflix........ UNTIL IT WAS ALL TOO LATE. Regroup, Intel, regroup!!!!! RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - SickBeast - 05-04-2016 Rollo can't handle it. This troubles him greatly. He cannot bear watching his cherished American corporation floundering and failing like this.
RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - BoFox - 05-07-2016 Apple is rumored to have all of its A9X processors made on 10nm, due in time for Xmas 2016 (Ipad Pro 2). If not the A10X, at least A11 is already taped out on TSMC's 10nm process. 2H 2017 appears to indicate an accelerated roadmap schedule for Iphone 7s. Even the annual iPhone launch timetable this year (iPhone 7) might be accelerated: http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone/iphone-7-release-launch-date-new-rumours-headphone-jack-leak-smart-connector-2016-3530504/#toc-4 LOTS and lots of scoops on this in above link, like waterproofing, spitting water out of the speakers, LOL.. Apple knows they need to fight harder, as iphone sales have been falling with Google and Samsung doing better this year relatively, ouch!!!!!!!!! What if Apple ditches Intel's air-cooled $300 Core M processors and goes with their beefed-up 6-8 core A10X's in their MacBooks? If Apple decides to move up from the 4.5W power envelope, to at least double that (say 12W, or even 15W, with some air-cooling)... BYE BYE, INTEL!!!! TSMC is already on track to beat Intel's 10nm fabbing tech to the punch, let alone Samsung! Quote:the real story in 2016 could very well be Apple's switch in processors. Will we see that happen? Only time will tell. http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2015/11/will-apples-2016-macbook-use-intels-next-gen-14nm-core-m-or-their-next-gen-a10x-processor.html Why continue to pay $300 for Intel's Core M processors that eat up to 15W (not 5W, since Intel's TDP is actually only representative of average workload at non-boosted clock rather than max consumption) when Apple could very easily make the A10X perform yet another 20-30% faster than the A9X, double up on the cores for better multitasking, and save hundreds of bucks of cash on each one of them fabbed at TSMC? I wonder just how Intel plans to continue to appeal to Apple when Apple's own dual-core (read: only 2 CPU cores) A9X already blows Surface Pro 4's air-cooled Core i5 out of the water in graphics while trading blows in the CPU benchmarks. ![]() Not even Nvidia's Tegra X1 in Google's Pixel C can even come close to this: ![]() Now, just imagine an air-cooled A10X in a lightweight MacBook running an updated optimized version of iOS, with at least 6 CPU cores... BTW, Samsung seriously needs to STOP ignoring the GPU aspect of their own dear tablets, especially with such falling sales of tablets in this market where the popularity of tablets has been declining so much. The progress of Galaxy Tab 2-->3-->4-->S-->S2, etc.. lagged SO far behind the GPU advances in each flagship phone generation (S2----->S7). What the heck, Samsung?!? We need a reason to upgrade our tablets!
RE: Intel Cancels Phone And Tablet Hardware - BoFox - 05-07-2016 Maybe Samsung needs to partner up with Nvidia for the tablets, with Nvidia's next Tegra SoCs made on 16nm, seriously.. I hope that this is what they settled upon. Or, Nvidia needs some another much more seriously all-out strategy like going after the gaming console market. |
