New Jersey police officer reportedly investigated for brake-checking motorist

A New Jersey police officer is being investigated after a dashcam video showed the officer suddenly braking in the middle of a roadway and then issuing the driver behind him multiple tickets, authorities said Friday.

According to NJ.com, video of the March 19 altercation surfaced on YouTube last week. It shows a Clifton resident, identified only as Omar B., and shows the Clifton police officer slamming on the brakes in front of the man.

There was no one in front of the officer at the time he slammed on the brakes. The officer admitted in the video that he only braked in front of the motorist because the driver was driving behind him too closely. The practice is known as “brake checking,” according to NJ.com.

"This cop could have hurt me, himself and anyone else who was behind me that couldn't stop in time," the individual wrote in the video.

Clifton Police Department spokesman Detective Sgt. Robert Bracken told NJ.com that the incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs officers.

This guy should be getting an attorney.

This was clearly a profiled stop.

Oops, cop, lots of people now have vehicle dash-cams recording the entire thing.....

Time for poorly educated cops to be more careful!  Big Grin

The guy had no licence plate on his car and he tailgated a cop.  And now you guys are surprised he got a ticket?

I'm not saying the cop should have slammed on his brakes like that. But the driver in the video had it coming. Tinted windows as well. Tinted windows should be completely illegal IMO.

Nah, not too surprised.  But I wouldn't say that the driver was tailgating the cop until the very very end, when the cop started slowing down to around 20mph or so.  If a car slows down like that in front of you, and you still have enough room to brake safely, then you're not tailgating.  Just IMHO.

Many states do not require a front plate.

For less than 30 miles per hour that was not tailgating.

Southern states cars come with tinted windows.

That may very well be the same cop that stopped debi and I when we were in that town in 2008.

We have a car bought in Oklahoma that came with tinted windows and no front tag required.

We were sitting at a red light. When the light turned this cop jumped our ass and pulled us over.

He yelled that our windows are illegal and missing a front tag.

I told him the car came from the factory like this straight off the dealership floor, should we send the car back to Hyundai in Korea?

I also advised him that no cars in Oklahoma have a front tag.

He then said debi's dream catcher is obstructing the windshield view and made her take it down.

You can see right through it.

He then said you are free to leave but he will be watching us.

He was a real piece of work.   Finger     Police13

I don't have any problems with cops. But then again I drive like a normal person and my car is pretty ordinary. No tinted glass, proper license plates, etc. But I do see a ton of turkeys on the road where I drive so I really appreciate the cops and the work they do to try to keep the roads safe. It's really bedlam out there and they have a tough job. I'm willing to cut them some slack if they have a bad day like this. The guy wasn't tailgating close but he should know better than that. He should have kept more distance. You should always leave cops alone to do their job.
