Two Alameda cops beat suspect repeatedly in the head during arrest

Disturbing video was taken early Thursday morning. The unidentified man runs from two Alameda County sheriff's deputies.

One of them yells stop and the deputy tackles the man as he slows down and begins to turn his head. He begins hitting the suspect with his fist as the second deputy arrives.

He pulls out his baton, repeatedly striking him in the head with great force. Then both of them begin swinging their batons, hitting the man as he lies on the ground.

The beating finally stops when police and other deputy sheriff's arrive on the scene.

A witness and the Public Defender's Office call it a "brutal beating."

"I heard just loud smack, smack, smacks. I really thought they were gunshots cause they were super loud," witness Redop Rundgren said.

Rundgren's apartment is above where the incident occurred. The screams woke him up.

"They kept screaming, 'Get on the ground," pushing him and beating him continuously," he said.

Rundgren rushed to the window. "He started trying to get up and crawl away while they were beating him. That's when I heard his screaming like, 'Stop, help me' or something of the sort," he recalled.

"He's on the ground. They could easily handcuff him, but they just keep hitting him," SF public defender Jeff Adachi said. "This is not only excessive force but it's brutality."

Chief Attorney Matt Gonzales says it was nothing short of assault. "I look forward to police explaining this conduct because as far as I'm concerned, it's criminal conduct," he said.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office says the suspect stole a car, rear-ended a sheriff's vehicle and ended up in a chase from San Leandro to San Francisco, where he smashed his car on Stevenson Street and ran.

The cops were pissed but still does not justify the beating.

So this guy stole a car (likely 10s of thousands of dollars worth of property), rammed a squad car with it, and the destroyed the car he stole and another one by crashing into it? After a dangerous high speed chase where innocent citizens could have been killed?

And the cops didn't treat a good guy like that well?

Shocking.

Dave, a criminal could tie up five innocent bystanders, burn them alive, gun down 20 cops with a machine gun, desecrate their corpses, and you would post "Brutal police taser innocent until proven guilty civilian. Damn those bastards!".

Absolutely

The Police are not Judge, Jury and Executioners.

Sigh. As much as it pains me to say it, even in the above example you are correct.

There is no need to beat him. You cannot defend that. If he was killing people, they have the right to use deadly force. If he was in a position where he could kill someone and the assumption was made that lifes are in danger, then the cops should take him out. But after he crashed the car and took off running, once the cops tackled him and he was in their hands.....there is no reason or right to continue to beat him. The guy was caught.

I would even argue that the cops had the right to shoot him when he was running away, if he had caused harm and danger to the lifes of other and there was a felling that he still posed a threat (like hijack another car or take hostages). But all that changes once they have that guy in their arms, once the got a hold of him, beating him is completely unexpected. Beating in retaliation is completely wrong. If he was a danger and still on the run, I feel deadly force is a valid option. But beating because your a cop and you can, that is wrong. The biggest reason you shouldnt beat a person, its because they are cops.

Cops must hold themselves to higher standards

After Beating in SF Mission by Alameda Officers, Man May Lose Use of His Arm

http://missionlocal.org/2015/11/after-brutal-beating-in-sf-mission-by-alameda-deputies-man-may-lose-use-of-his-arm/

Quote:A man who was beaten by Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies in a Mission District alley last Thursday following a high-speed car chase from San Leandro may permanently lose the use of his arm.
Stanislav Petrov’s injuries were so severe they required surgery, said Tamara Barak Aparton, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, which has condemned the deputies’ actions.
Doctors have told Petrov’s mother that, even after the surgery, his arm “may be permanently disabled,” Aparton said.

Quote:“From his elbow through his hands are swollen,” Woods said. “It looks like he has several broken bones in both of his hands or arm areas.”

Quote:She said her son, now 29, has led a difficult life — diagnosed with multiple mental disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

That would make for a really strong court defense case - if they can prove that he was diagnosed with multiple mental disorders.

Cops could just go and beat up mentally retarded victims all they want, break every limb in their bodies, and cause them to lose some of the limbs.....   NOT.
