RE: AMD Regained Market Share This Quarter - ocre - 11-17-2015 This is shipments to AiBs, not cards that sold yet. Nvidia shipments increased the Quarter over last, that means that nvidia GPUs are selling about as intended, 8 out of 10 GPUs sold are Nvidia GPUs. Since we are talking about shipments to AiBs and not actual cars sold, there are two important factors that drive these figures: Current stock and anticipation. AiBs who have stock piles of chips that did not sale from previous orders, they will order less next time. Looking at the AiB shipments is like looking at the front end. While it can me more volatile, it will always sort itself out. Looking at the past few quarters, the picture is quite accurate. A sudden uptick, it is always based off anticipation but if it is followed by another uptick, then you know things are going at least as goof or better than intended. This market share increase to AMD could easily be misread. There are other things to consider, for example, AiBs may have slacked up on their orders in Q2 because of existing inventory and channels that needed cleared. Since this market share is figured by total shipments divided by vendor, AiBs having a stock pile and ordering less would result in a market share increase for the other vendor. We have to take in account that AMD has a new series and at some point the 200 series stock pile would finally work itself down. By looking at the last several quarters, things become pretty clear. AMD seems to have lost a bing chunk of market share to nvidia. Nvidia is now selling at a rate higher than 8 out of 10 GPUs. Two quarters reflect that and since AiBs ordered more Nvidia chips this quarter than last, they did move the volumes they intended in Q2. If AMD partners were waiting on the 300 series stock (to clear channels or just for the available volumes), just them ordering more would effect their market share. What we can say for sure is that AMD partners anticipate to move more cards this quarter than last. We will see if this confirms itself in quarter 4 when AiBs order again. If the order more than last and the marketshare further increases in AMDs favor, then that anticipation is validated. If they loose volume/market share, then obviously the cards didnt move as well as intended. Nvidia lost .8% marketshare when they actually increased shipments. This is because AMD increases their shipments by a wider percentage. It is good for AMD but it may not mean what some think. It could mean that AiBs were too aggressive in their negative outlook in the previous Quarter, it could mean that their loss of marketshare has found its bottom and the current is a more accurate adjustment, this could be a reflection that AiBs had stock in the channels that had finally cleared itself, or it could be just that there is higher anticipation for the 300 series. Probably a combination if you ask me. AMDs market share plummeted way to fast, i think the most likely reason was that channels were not clearing and there were a lot of cards not sold. This caused AiBs to order far less than they would, see when you look at AiB shipments (the front end), it always works itself out. There will be adjustments and swings. In my opinion, this current data is both sides coming more to the center. Next Quarter will be interesting, i dont expect much change but wouldnt mind a huge surprize (in AMDs favor). So while i warn about reading this the wrong way, I am still hopeful AMD continues on a more successful road RE: AMD Regained Market Share This Quarter - RolloTheGreat - 11-17-2015 Nice find SteelCrysis! Yep, that .8% shift will certainly have some at NVIDIA on pins and needles this holiday season! LOL- the .8% probably just reflects the number of Furys they shipped to Advocates. RE: AMD Regained Market Share This Quarter - ocre - 11-17-2015 Hahah, just read my post..... I can't believe how terrible post are when I am on a phone. So many typos......... Sorry about that |
