SETI Has Observed a 'Strong' Signal That May Originate From a Sun-like Star
The RATAN-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya, Russia has detected a strong signal around 11 GHz (which is very unlikely to be naturally-caused) coming from HD164595, a star nearly identical in mass to the Sun and located about 95 light years from Earth. The system is known to have at least one planet. If the signal were isotropic, it would seem to indicate a Kardashev Type II civilization. While it is too early to draw any conclusions, the discovery will be discussed at an upcoming SETI committee meeting on September 27th.
According to Paul Gilster, author of the Centauri Dreams website, "No one is claiming that this is the work of an extraterrestrial civilization, but it is certainly worth further study. Working out the strength of the signal, the researchers say that if it came from an isotropic beacon, it would be of a power possible only for a Kardashev Type II civilization. If it were a narrow beam signal focused on our Solar System, it would be of a power available to a Kardashev Type I civilization. The possibility of noise of one form or another cannot be ruled out, and researchers in Paris led by Jean Schneider are considering the possible microlensing of a background source by HD164595. But the signal is provocative enough that the RATAN-600 researchers are calling for permanent monitoring of this target."

Edit the thread title, Alpha Centauri is a bit over 4 light years away, and the signal is coming from elsewhere anyway.

Well, does anyone think the US would not downplay this? With the mega trillions our glutinous nation spends and Russia finds the signal. Has anyone else noticed the consistent and predictable down playing of any and all things having to do with Russia.
Its unbelievable, how quick our government goes our if its way to contest and slap all things Russian. Profound.
Just some recent examples, Russian in Syria. They were killing thousands of terrorist yet the US completely rejected. Instead of collaboration or ar the very least acknowledgement...the US trashed russia.
Then there was the super long distance precision missiles, russia recorded the firing and targets, the video was footage was broadcast as the event occured, the US comes out immediately saying 4 crashed in Iran..this was the us story with absolutely no proof, they insisted...4 out of the 20, which is a h pretty large failure rate. Yet, not even Iranians could find any sign of a crashed missle. Somehow we are supposed to believe that there were 4 missiles they all crashed in some obscure location in iran. They travelled across several countries, thru occupied air space, over top cities and towns a like...but the US claims that almost 20% of them crashed...its possible that perhaps one failure could have been luck enough to land so far out no one would see or hear it...but all 4? And all 4 crash in this same obscure location?
It really doesnt matter what it is, the US is always quick to downplay and denounce anything russia

I can never go home to my planet, it's been gone a long time. You wouldn't believe me if I told you, it is too alien to life you know.
On my planet, when young people entered society they would work at jobs, and when the income from their job was not enough, they would work two, sometimes three jobs.
If they did not have things like health insurance or retirement plans they would keep looking for work until they found jobs where they had these things, and then strive to remain employed at these jobs. This worked pretty well, 86% of the people had insurance, and the 14% who didn't were mainly very young people finding their way forward who didn't need the insurance much anyway.
If the people didn't like the sort of jobs they were getting, they would work and borrow their way through various types of schooling to position themselves better for the jobs they did want. If that didn't work they would try again.
On my alien planet, men and women (or women/women, men/men) were equal partners striving for the betterment of their family. They would both work, and try to make secure homes for their families by doing things like not spending every cent banks would loan them. In this fashion, if one or the other lost their job or couldn't work, their home and basic needs would still be provided for. People from my planet didn't walk away from their homes and leave them foreclosed, because they realized that there are no guarantees in life and purchased to ensure that no matter what, they would have their home and the necessities to survive while regrouping after economic adversity.
On my planet people realized that separation of church and state is a good thing because not everyone has the same religion, and even those who do are often bitterly divided on key issues the sky spirits don't seem to want to show up to address.
We had laws and procedures for illegal immigration into our territories and did not build xenophobic walls.
If a woman had sex with someone she was not married to and her birth control failed she was allowed to end the pregnancy early term without being harassed and not bring unwanted children into the world. Safe and effective birth control was made available to all because it was realized that children are both our future and our most sacred responsibility, that no child should be born unwanted.
On my planet, everyone did not think they were entitled to the fabulous make believe lifestyles of the people in our televised dramas. They understood they actually had to go to work, and that they might live in houses under 4000 square feet and not drive expensive cars and go on vacation every few weeks.
I could go on and on, but you wouldn't believe me because all you have ever known is where I live now:

People bought homes they couldn't really afford (and not extravagant McMansions either, just normal, basic homes) because their banks told them that they could afford to do so and they would be better off than just renting.
The banks were lying out of their arses of course, signing up anybody and everybody in the pursuit of more and more profit for them with no regard at all to whether it was actually affordable for the mortgagee, which 9 times out of 10 it wasn't.
We know how it all ended in the most recent financial crisis. And the people didn't walk away and foreclose, they still tried their best to repay the mortgage, but the banks foreclosed on them and then tossed them out.
No Gstan, for a lot of us every word I said was true.
Let's say you make $4000 a month gross and it's your only asset and source of income. If banker Rollo tells you that you should easily be able to afford $2000/mo mortgage and if you find you can't you can always sell at a profit and walk away, who is responsible if you believe me?
Me, a business man trying to sell you something and trusting you know your situation better than I and will only buy what you can afford?
Or you, who makes the final decision on all purchases?
I just bought a house. Spent WAY less than the bank said I could afford. Either my wife or I can afford this house, same as the last two houses. We know that if one of us loses our job or can't work, we'll keep our home, have a car to drive, and food to eat. I understand that buying a house is a big financial responsibility, I don't care what anyone else thinks I can afford.
Have to have a back up plan in life GStan, it's the smart way to do business.

The property market collapsed, so no the mortgagees couldn't sell at all, let alone at a profit!
The difference between you purchasing a house and the people who got foreclosed on is that you can actually afford to purchase the house, the people who got foreclosed on couldn't afford a house and wouldn't ever have been given mortgages, by responsible, sensible and non-greedy loans officers in the past.
If they can't afford houses, why are they at banks signing loan papers?
Did the bankers come to their apartments, march them out at gun point to the bank and say "Sign here, it's a good deal!"
Did the bankers drug their water and make them forget they what they owed, what their income is, that they could lose the income, that the housing market goes up and down, and that they may have unexpected expenses?
The difference between them and me isn't what I can afford, it's that I do remember all that stuff.
When we lived in our first house, I would search for deals on used cars with low mileage and hopefully some warranty left. I remembered the above because the responsibility is entirely mine and I didn't want to get in a position where we couldn't pay our bills.
That's the only difference Gstan.
The people were victims of their own greed. They saw the housing market going up at a fever pitch, people who could afford the losses making money on quickly amassed equity, and ignored the risk.
I guess it would have been nice if bankers hadn't let them fuck themselves, but bankers are not your mom and looking out for your best interests. Bankers are only responsible for the banks best interest. Kind of like drug companies and video card companies, just trying to make a buck.

In other words greedy arse-holes manipulated hopeful, gullible and ignorant peoples' wish to fulfil a dream of home ownership with no regard to their well being or ability to repay the loan, the only thing that mattered to the greedy arse-holes was the profit coming their way for making the sale, however dodgy it might be.
How much experience do you have with the real estate industry GStan?
I used to be a real estate broker who sold homes for people, and I've purchased 4 homes myself.
People aren't "conned" or "pressured" by banks and realtors, banks and realtors just want business, so they pretty much bend over backwards to be nice to people. They work on commission, and the process is to long and drawn out to do any "pressuring" or "conning".
It takes a month just to get a deal together, and the buyers can back out at any time, often without even losing earnest money. Not to mention they sought out these people (banks/realtors) to start with.

Say what you will.
There have been so many US claims as of late that Russia has shown actual evidence that contradicts.
embarrassing when our country makes claims with no evidence to back them up only to have Russia turn and release actual data that shows different.
We have the usa insisting and only their words as if they are somehow more powerful than radar or air traffic reports.
The plane shot down in the Ukraine or the Russian plane that never entered turkey air space, just to name a few.
Its very clear there is an effort to denounce Russia anything but I dont care enough to have anymore to say on the subject...
Honestly, couldn't care less about Russia. Just saying

MH17 was shot down by a Russian-supplied Buk-series SAM. The overhead shot of the Russian fighter and MH17 is a ridiculous Photoshop, and the claim that a Ukrainian-rebel-owned Su-25 ground attack plane that had no radar, would be lucky to get to 7000 meters altitude, was slower than MH17, and had no AAM better than a R-73 if it had any AAMs at all that day, shot down MH17 is beyond laughable.
