Valve didn't get the memo about Vulkan on Linux only working with AMD GPUs, and is unaware that their Steam Machines just got a monkey wrench thrown into them.
Quote:While for cross-platform developers it makes a great-sense to use Vulkan, DirectX 12 still has a number of advantages. The Vulkan API is still not finalized, so it cannot really be used for commercial products right now. As a result, those, who plan to release their titles in the next twelve month, should keep using DirectX 12.

After Steam/Valve takes a beating from this, Microsoft will be swooping down like a mad vulture, nibbing up the pieces. Most people have no idea how badly Microsoft really wants to buy Steam out, and compete better against Google Play and Apple App Store - the itch will be getting so much worse that Microsoft will no longer be able to resist giving in.
Heck, Microsoft paid $2bn for Minecraft alone! Steam is an absolute no-brainer, unless M$ really does not have a brain...

Yay, nail in the coffin for Mantle or whatever it was! But thanks in part to Mantle (and AMD)!

Quote:AMD is also excited about Vulkan. When asked about the performance increase users might see when moving to the new API, the company's spokesperson said, "it could be total BS when all is said and done: but I think 7-15% in GPU-bound scenarios, and up to 25% in scenarios where the game is binding the CPU." AMD sees benefits for both low-end and high-end computers, as Vulkan is "designed to eliminate CPU binding on modest CPUs, and then expand performance on powerful CPUs."

Don't worry GStan. I'm sure Vulkan will be every bit as popular as the other AMD based initiatives like 3DNow!, TruForm, and Mantle.
Oh.....wait.....
