I not only have no problem being wrong, I want to know when I am so I can be right next time. If you're wrong you just change the parameters of the discussion or point us to some nonsense that you think will support your argument. You are wrong all the time. You are wrong about universal health care. You are in large part wrong about the Xbox One. You are wrong when you state that 4k TV will make no difference for most people from most viewing distances. You are wrong in your opinions of Canada, a place I doubt you have even visited. All your stuff about "slackers" is nonsense as well. It's a horrible excuse not to help people in need. I could go on but that's most of it in a nutshell, at least in terms of what you have spouted off about recently.

Sell your 1080p TVs, buy a $400 player and 4K tv, buy or rent some much more costly content, move your couch up close so you can see the difference!
Yep, "3d fad" for 2016.

For 2016, maybe, but not for 2020 when OLED is much cheaper (maybe 80" for less than $1500)? 4K bluray players for $100, movies for no more than what ordinary blu-rays go for nowadays..
80" means you'd tell a significant difference from over 16 feet away. If your couch is 20' away, then get a 100" screen, dammit! Mine is only like 11-13 feet away from a 100" screen, and it's better than any Regal cinemas or IMAX theaters (all of which are too big viewed from the middle for my taste).
Well, I digress.. if 4K content (over cable) remains unavailable or "premium", then 4K stuff would likely continue to command premium prices, even well into year 2020.
4K adoption looks to be at least twice as slow as HD adoption of the 2000's.

This all makes perfect sense to me.
I don't know if it has to go OLED even, it will just take broadcast content for me.
I'm not watching movies 99.9% of the time, so I just want tv in 4K before I buy it. (or in 2 years when Rollo Jr moves out and takes his tv out of the rec room, whichever comes first)

Tiny selection of marginal titles except Kingsman and The Martian.
BluRay is dead, and BluRay for a smaller market at higher cost won't be what saves it.

Nope, 4K Bluray will succeed.
Regardless, there just needs to be 4K 3D at 120Hz (24fps for movies is still fine, but it's a nice ratio of 1:5 for 120Hz, rather than an assymetric timing ratio of 60Hz). Perhaps there might be some more serious movies like Avatar 2 filmed at 48Hz, thus wrecking the "ratio" once again, lol?

3D is as dead as BluRay, no one wants to wear their 3d glasses.

The studios all need to work together to create a 4k movie "Netflix" type of service that's affordable, say $10 a month. Otherwise they are just going to lose out, similar to what happened to the music industry when they were caught flat footed by technological advances. No one in their right mind wants to have to deal with physical disks and paying $30 for them is crazy to me. You can take your whole family to the movie theatre for that price.

There is no hope left for physical media. Actually the rumors are saying that the new Nintendo NX console will not use physical media at all. In fact I read another rumor that said that the NX will come out this year along with a new Zelda game for both the Wii U and the NX.

Sony ended up the "last man standing" in an obsolete technology.
Can you imagine going back playing your music on CDs? Same thing applies. Why would anyone want to dick around with buying physical media, or worse yet, renting it when content is streamed from where you're sitting these days?
There will always be people like BoFox notes saying "You can't get a 4k HDR 3d image streamed! You have to spend the $400 on a player, and $30 a disk, and sit close to the more expensive tv, and wear your 3d glasses!" but will that segment be enough to keep Sony going?
It's sort of like when I was saying "Buy three 3d monitors and game in 3d surround like me!". Sure it was better, but the market didn't care.
4k BluRay is DOA, there will be no significant shift to it. I bet most people will be like me and think, "I wasn't getting BluRays and I've had that "better tech" for years..."

Wow Greg you've really been brainwashed by the console hogwash! You think physical PS4 discs are cheaper? Compare the prices you pay for your PS4 games to the price for the same game on PC. You're stuck buying and selling a bunch of discs that you have to finagle with while I get to keep all the games I buy forever and I'm paying a fraction of the cost for games that always run at full 1080p resolution with better graphics and more features.
Physical media is dead. Like I said, the new NX is rumored to not have an optical drive and chances are that's the way things will go with all future consoles. It's long overdue IMO.

Sony has done extremely well with physical media and the PS4, so for that matter has GameStop/EB Games.
I laugh when I see people complain about the $20 - $30 digital download premium over a retail disc on forums, then I go out and purchase a pre-owned disc and save at least that $20 - $30 a second time!
People are slowly starting to wake up with digital download that it is expensive (and will get even more expensive as it takes more of the market share, just like cable tv) and you game subject to the whims of the digital account holder. XBOX can and does render your game collection useless if you get a Live ban (just like steam).

Quote:There’s certainly no denying physical media sales are declining in the U.S. Sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs fell 12% in 2015 to $6.1 billion, according to the Digital Entertainment Group after an 11% drop in 2014.
Meanwhile, digital revenues rose 18% in 2015.
Sure, everyone still "has" a BluRay player, and probably use them every now and again, but losing 23% of their market over the last two years is a death spiral.

Very interesting article on the subject just popped up (love the timing!)
http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/micros...-industry/
Quote:IGN recently spoke with XBLA creator Greg Canessa about his vision for the service and the success that it has had. He surprisingly reveals that, “There was a legitimate fear that Xbox Live Arcade was going to cannibalize retail sales and completely destroy the console industry. That was actually a quote I got from one of the internal folks.”
The fear stemmed from the cheaper price points and greater convenience of just downloading games rather than actually going to a brick-and-mortar store. Thus, they wanted to make sure that XBLA distinguished itself from all of that by offering different kinds of gaming experiences.
It will be fascinating to see what SickBeast and Rollo have to say about the above....
I don't know about SB, but what I have to say is:
http://fortune.com/2015/06/03/streaming-movies-revenue/
Quote:The PricewaterhouseCoopers study found the revenue from downloading and streaming is expected to jump 13% to $9.5 billion in 2015 as sales of physical DVDs lower to $7.8 billion. The firm added that streaming will become a $12 billion industry in 2017, rising above the money spent going to movie theaters.
Oh noes, there's the pesky multi billion consulting firm, totally contradicting what "average battler" GStan and some hearsay from an unnamed source on a hack website "attackofthefanboy".
Who to believe here? Who to believe?
Pretty much every reputable news and consulting source that says dvd/bluray sales have been falling for years while streaming has been rising at the same time?
Or GStan and attackofthefanboy?
What a puzzler!
The universities I attended did not prepare me to make difficult decisions like this.
GStan and attackofthefanboy may have key information that the consulting and news firms couldn't access even though that is their job.
Dude, it's one thing to just not be very smart.
It's another altogether to just ignore industry trends year after year, reputable mega consulting companies, the vast majority of available evidence and yell about the BluRay industry doing great.
This is EXACTLY the way a Sony shill would act, and I'm saying it straight out:
If you're not a Sony shill, they should point to your example for their training.
You know damn well BluRay never took off and has been fading for years.

12% loss after 11% loss does not equal 23% total. More like 22% over 2 years.
Well, that's a considerable decrease, nonetheless, with all Blockbuster stores long gone and forgotten.. I really miss going to these stores. The era has changed. :(
Yet, even with Netflix offering a couple 4K tv shows, the bandwidth requirement (like faster than 25Mbps internet which most Americans still don't have), AND the bandwidth CAP... it's going to be like trying to stream 1080p Youtube videos onto your phone via its own 4G service and hoping that it plays smoothly while on-the-go, while not hitting the monthly allotment cap.
Ya know, there were people saying that Bluray would be a failure from the beginning (when the PS3 was launched). It actually was, in a way, since I never bought an internal bluray drive for any of my computers. Only bought an external drive, once. Bluray burners never caught my interest - the BD-R's were just too expensive and cumbersome.
Perhaps the 4K Bluray market will be to Bluray as Bluray was to DVD. An even smaller market - more of a niche one, but still successful nonetheless, since there are still many movie aficionados who want the quality. The new HDR feature seems to be a mixed bag - making those who bought early-gen 4K TV's that don't support HDR feel let down with buying these overpriced movie discs with such a useless feature that's being heavily promoted.
I'm wondering if the new HDR feature actually detracts from the original picture as the filmmaker intended (like with dynamic contrast and 120Hz soap opera effect)? If it tweaks the picture too much from what the film at theater cinemas showed, then it's just some more gimmickery.

Gosh, GStan it looks like even Sony themselves disagree with you:
http://www.edn.com/electronics-blogs/bri...urely-dead
Quote:Fast forward to today, and what does Sony have to say? As mentioned by The Verge in coverage of the company's "adjustment" of forecasted income in advance of the formal announcement of Q1 2014 earnings:
The second [impairment] charge is due to what Sony calls "demand for physical media contracting faster than anticipated," especially in Europe. Because of this, Sony says it does not believe the business will generate "sufficient cash flow in the future to recover the carrying amount of long-lived assets." It anticipates an impairment charge on those assets, and a second charge on the overall value of its disc manufacturing business, which will amount to 25 billion yen ($245 million).
Waiting for GStan to start yelling about BluRay is doing great and not to believe Sony's FUD about their own product. They do not know as much as attackofthefanboy!

Point to drive home:
If discs are a thing of the past, perhaps all fancy "exclusive" consoles will also be a thing of the past as well. Why limit oneself to the HD-DVD format when the Bluray format was taking off and winning by light-years? Why limit oneself to PSP UMD movies that would only play on the PSP and nothing else?
In that vein..
If everything could be streamed from the cloud (not just movies but games), wouldn't all we need is some simple "Smart" TV or monitor that is capable of fast streaming and quality output? Why need a PS4 if devs figure that all of their games could be streamed from the cloud with no more than ~50ms lag (total ping times), with perhaps even better quality like at 4K. A PS4 would just be an expensive $400 doorstop that had a few exclusive games, like with that HD-DVD player and its discs, or the PSP and its UMD movie discs.
Until that happens, Bluray is not dead, and Gamestop is still a $2 billion company (valued more than AMD). First, bandwidth needs to be uncapped (or at least 1TB per month for $50) across over 80% of the USA, at greater than 50-75Mbps, with less than 20-30ms ping across 70% of the USA (i.e., no more than 25ms for data streamed from Denver to NYC).
But before that, more importantly, 4G LTE needs to be more widespread and bountiful (or replaced by 5G), with at least 40x the normal bandwidth allotment for the average user (5GB/mo seems to be "nice" these days, but really, it's so horrendous compared to when we'd be getting 200GB/mo for cheap, before we know it). Youtube is the future, but cellphone carriers do not want us to use Youtube just quite yet... yet... yet...

Geez, I noticed this again.. and can't get over what AMD is trying to say about 1080p HDR looking better than 4K SDR:
Ummmmm.... maybe for ordinary LCD tech, which looks plain horrible. Even 480p on a 40" Sony WEGA (ancient CRT tv) looks 1000x better than 720p on any LCD, because of the contrast and colors..
But with OLED's and their infinite contrast ratio, breathtaking color quality - why would we be needing HDR at all?!????
This, I don't get.. HDR is just a fix for craptacular panels that cannot get the blacks where they are at (and also for viewing in daylight or in a brightly lit room).

The "LEDs are much better for bright rooms" is a fallacy IMHO.
Even when we watch tv at night in our living room we have to turn off a little end table lamp that is 14'-15' away from the 60" LED Sharp Aquos. (or else we look at a fuzzy reflection of it on the matte screen.
At least with our 50" plasmas we got deep black, high contrast, and perfect motion for turning out there lights.
As far as AMD goes, I don't doubt 1080p HDR looks as good 4K SDR, at least if you're more than 10' away from it.

It's more the heat, power consumption, and the burn in that worries me about plasma. Yes, it does have better picture quality, no one is disputing that. However most people are very practical and economical and they are not willing to invest money into a product that consumes 3 times the amount of power, pumps out a ton of heat, and burns in and gets ruined if you accidentally leave a static image on it for too long.
