Games with Gold didn't happen until after the PS3 started catching up to the 360 and was an attempt to try and stop the PS3 from overtaking 360 sales wise. PS+ free games were a well established thing at that point.
M$ is giving away A+ titles relatively early on in CrapBOX's life not because they want to but because they have to in order to generate sales. The games being given away could be earning M$ royalties through sales.
Sony originally started PS+ free games for the exact same reasons - to sell more PS3's.

Did I say companies don't give away games to boost sales? Gosh, no.
Did I say MS can afford to give away games and Sony can't anymore? Gee, yes.
If you weren't shilling for Sony, you'd probably realize that MS giving away decent to good software with something that costs $40/year to consumers is really pretty nice for the consumers.
Like my son and Bofox noted, PSN free games are peasant bullshit, pretty much an insult to their customers.
