Advice On Whining MSI GTX 1070
#1
I don't know what to do with this card. I put up with the coil whine because it was better than my EVGA GTX 1070. By the time I got fed up, Newegg's return policy had expired, and MSI is refusing to let me return the card. What can I do?

Oh man. Don't quote me on this, but I have heard of people putting some kind of glue on certain parts of the card. I would personally never do that, particularly on a card like that. Also, are you using vsync? Because I have heard that coil whine is typically much worse when you are getting extremely high framerates.

Beyond that there isn't much you can do (if anything) AFAIK. I'm sorry to hear that you're having to deal with that. I guess you could try gaming with a good pair of headphones. Is it happening all the time, even at idle when you're not gaming?

Really if it bothers you that much your only real option is to sell the card on Kijiji or something.

The coil whine only becomes a problem when the GPU is under load. Otherwise, my case keeps me from hearing it. I don't run Vsync for my game because Vsync only works with it when it's fullscreen. But for the game I'm playing, the frames don't get much higher than 65 FPS.

That's brutal. I've always found MSI's RMA service to be excellent. The thing is, though, you will probably just wind up with another card that whines.

You could probably come out ok if you just sell the card. I know that's terrible when you just bought the card, but if the whine bothers you, you should probably do it. Those cards are still in extremely high demand so you might not even take a hit. If you buy another card, Staples typically has the best return policy, at least here in Canada. Plus they price match other retailers and you can usually apply a coupon. That way if you get another lemon at least they will take it back.

Hmm, I never asked if I could RMA the card, I just asked how I could return it. I'll give undervolting the card a try.

Are other people complaining online about the coil whine with that particular card? If not, you might have got a lemon. It might be worth RMAing the card.

This guy has a similar problem to me, though his card is the higher clocked version of my card: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3...zzing.html Will MSI send me a replacement card before I send them my whining GTX 1070?

No. I'm pretty sure you have to send in your old card first. I have always had good experiences with them though. It sounds like it's worth a shot for you. Mind you, from what I have read, *all* cards exhibit some type of coil whine. I'm not sure how sensitive your hearing is. My hearing is not great so I have never noticed coil whine on any of my cards. But I also game with vsync on at 60fps or lower.

I followed this guys advice (https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments...rs/d5ovwyh) and managed to get the coil whine down a little.

Edit: No, that didn't work, it just changed the sound of the whine, and maybe made it worse at idle. I just don't feel comfortable with undervolting. I don't know what to do.

The problem with undervolting is that it is going to ruin your overclocking. The stock voltage on the nvidia cards seems absolutely perfect. Are there no other options? Maybe contact MSI and see what they say.

I did contact MSI to ask about RMAing the card. Was quoted anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month to get the card back. Absolutely unacceptable.

Edit: One more detail: I'm running my particular game in windowed mode (otherwise the in-game cursor disappears at any scaling higher than 125%) at a resolution close to 4K.

Is it only happening in the one game?

No, it's also happening in Unigine Heaven.

But other games are fine? I would probably just live with that, personally.

You're putting glue on a $400 video card over one game at one setting and a benchmark you have no reason to run?

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't have spent the time to write in this thread over that, and for sure wouldn't cobble on a card for that.

I would: a. Run the game at a different setting b. not run the benchmark.

My $.02

I havent messed with coil whine in many many years. Hot glue was effective but the problem is placement. The location of the vibration must be found, used touch and listen to find a time change. Apply hot glue.
Sometimes, the tone changes but the whine is still there. But I have had a second application resolve this.

Admittedly, no experience with modern gpu and components. And personaly, I have never had coil whine in any of my personal PCs or gpus. But at my old pc shop, have had to deal with it a few times.

Its been many yrs ago.

Todays hardware may be different and it appears most people don't have luck with hot glue. But its not as simple as, "put glue on these". So that doesn't surprise me.
Don't know if they still do but several yrs back you would find all kinds of electronics with globs oh silicon and glue covering components to dampen version. It is something that works. Its just finding the point of max oscillation, and starting from there.

But I am not suggesting you do anything to your 400$ card. Just sharing

At this point, I'm just going to live with it. At least it doesn't cause problems at idle.

Mention apoppin and he whines. Talk about socialism and he whines. He's generally ok otherwise though. Just don't get him started. So that's how to avoid Rollo's whining. We know how to avoid it in both cases now. Smile

Actually if you mention the PS4 he will whine as well.

Perhaps someone put glue on your head then if you have stopped whining.

You must be totally rattled that I have right all along and you didn't see the troll right in front of your eyes.

I think you might be this teacher:

Ocre did you say that you sometimes need to apply glue twice to stopping the whining? Rollo is still whining.

Good news: I was able to greatly reduce the coil whine. Before, I had my GTX 1070 hooked up to my EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 PSU using 1 cable, which had 1 6-pin connector and 1 6+2-pin connector. Today, I hooked my GTX 1070 up using 2 cables, and that greatly reduced my coil whine under load. It also reduced my coil whine at idle a little bit, though the coil whine at idle was so quiet to begin with that I had to put my ear next to the back of the case to hear it.
