I bet if you could magically remove all advertising and advertiser dollars from tv, radio, internet they would all still continue on. The ad industry inserted itself into these industries (as well as the print media industry) almost from the outset of each industry, so we've never had a chance to see what these industries would be like free from the influence of advertising.

GStan has apparently forgotten it costs a lot of money to put together tv and radio shows, and people are probably not going to spend it just so he can watch "Sponge Bob" and "Teen Titans".
If advertising was removed from TV and radio it would all be subscription based like XM radio or HBO. So those things would go on, but they would cost a lot more money.

Yes, but has gone overboard now. Shows are mainly Ads now very little content. A half hour show is down to 11 minutes of show. An hour show is down to 23 minutes of show.

In what country?

Quote:In 2009, the broadcast networks averaged 13 minutes and 25 seconds of commercial time per hour. In 2013, that figure grew to 14 minutes and 15 seconds.
The growth has been even more significant on cable television. In 2009, cable networks averaged 14 minutes and 27 seconds per hour. Last year, the average was 15 minutes and 38 seconds.

Obviously it has gotten worse. Main reason I don't watch much TV, it's unwatchable.
Dumb on their part but the 1% is not smart, they are just rich.

I don't know any 1% folk, I'm too poor. Birds of a feather, flock together.
However; the families I know that are well into the single digit percentiles are very smart people. Working professionals that have other working professionals working for them.

I don't even subscribe to cable TV (except for the local channels and HBO as part of the Verizon 50/50 FIOS package). We have Netflix, Hulu, and are thinking of Sling.TV ($20/month). We get discrete 5.1 sound on many TV shows and movies at good 1080 quality from Netflix, on our PS3. No commercials.
Hulu has a no commercials plan for $11.99 (about $3-4 more) per month, but the commercials aren't as long as on standard cable tv.
Cable TV sucks balls! I'd rather be able to watch any TV show whenever I want, on the fly. No need for DVR recording. Traditional cable TV really needs to die.

Cable has a virtual monopoly most places in Wisconsin.
No FIOS or U-Verse, so we're left with:
1. Broadcast- not a huge channel line up
2. Sling- buffering issues
3. Satellite- weather issues
4. Netflix/VuDu/Hulu/etc- as far as I know, either last year's shows or pay per view, neither optimal and possible buffer issues.
So I have cable with HBO/Cinemax/Showtime. I believe I can watch online, but that would eat up my 10GB shared data plan pretty quick on cell.
You HAVE to have them for an ISP. I think DSL at my house is a whole 6 MBPS, compared to 60 for cable. Satellite is expensive and has BS up speeds, and a cell phone jet pack isn't going to feed Rollo Jrs online gaming plus us surfing web as well as cable modem does.
Tough times in the sticks! My cable and cell phone bill over $5000/year, they have me by the short and curlies.

6 MegaBYTES per second? If so, that's pretty good. If just 6 Mbps, then that is "ugh, meh"... big time! 6 MBps = 48 Mbps. I get around 58-60 Mbps as part of my 50/50 FIOS package (download and upload), and am happy with it. I don't really need more... it's not worth paying $25/mo more just for 25 more Mbps, since I pay $60/mo for everything, with truly UNLIMITED download cap per month (I've done over 400GB many months, no problem).

I got unlimited 30Mbps cable. Then for television there is direct tv, Netflix, and Amazon prime.
I guess when you start adding in phones, the expense gets up there. But I don't ever pay attention to that crap, it's auto charged to my debit. Don't even think about it.
I guess that is what they want.
Oh well.....consumer me

Damn, you better be careful with letting these cell phone companies auto-charge your bank account!!! One month, there could be like $30000 worth of BS charges, like with long distance charges from somebody trying to call collect.... I've seen enough articles about this that Dave shared here on the forums, LOL haha!
I refuse to let these companies auto-debit my account. It's always review-and-pay per month. BTW, don't forget to check out FreedomPop. I have the best GPS tablet in the world, and that is, with free 4G connection, that can be used for the internet, phone, texting, etc.. up to 1GB per month, free for life!!! As many devices as you want!!!

Never heard of frredomPop. That is pretty awesome bofox. I will for sure check it out. Thanks a bunch..
As for my debit, I really don't pay attention auto charges or anything like I should. I do check the balance of my debit card account every week but that is just to see if I am over my limit......wait....
I guess is the opposite of most people, see I have an upper limit for my debit account. When my account gets to that limit or over it, I pull out the sum and put it in savings or my other account with no active debit cards attached to it. I get a little afraid using my debit everywhere when it is attached to large sums of money. I like to keep my debit card account under 5k.
See, I have no debt or credit cards. I have direct deposit to my debit card account and I check it weekly to see if I need to pull money out of that account. I guess I should pay more attention to my charges though, I just haven't bothered

Eh, my bad on the acronym. 6Mbps, 3rd world "broad"band.
No FIOS here, just cable.
