Interesting - I don't think it's just global warming - as Antarctica just had the largest freeze across the surrounding sea this past September, ever recorded in history.  Earth's patterns are just changing over time.  NYC's been getting lots of heavy snowstorms lately.

BTW, 28" of snow just fell over the weekend, basically stranded here at home.  Stuffing that fireplace!

Well, that's how much snow drives me nuts.

But I'd still love to take a stroll around the beaches and cliffs of Tasmania even in exchange for today!  Just take off the shirt, take a dip in the surrounding waters - let a bit of sun-gazing nourish the soul (it actually does - it's scientifically proven to be much more than just Vitamin D especially if the eyes get to see the sun)!  Some exotic forests in Taz, right?  

Edit - There's one that's practically "prehistoric", IIRC!  You did see that one, didn't you?

It was an ordinary Nor'easter in January.

Yay, the city needs rest!!  Can't imagine the traffic in Manhattan trying to do business as usual for the next couple days..  time is money and money is everything!!!!!

While that is a lot of snow I think the bigger problem for you guys down there is that you don't have the equipment to deal with it. Up here we have tons of plows and stuff. I'm not saying that wasn't a big snowfall because it was, even by our standards up here. I'm just glad that more people were not hurt. It's supposed to warm up this week, no? I hope you guys are OK when it all melts. I hope your basement is ok!

The plows did a great job yesterday.  I find it strange how they didn't pre-treat the roads with plenty of salt beforehand, like they do in New York. 
There were 5 leaks from the roof when the heavy snow started melting a bit - going down to the sliding door in the kitchen.  Only lasted for a few hours yesterday, hoping it doesn't happen again. 

Toronto area gets like 50" of snow a year, right?  If you were on the other side of Lake Ontario, you'd be getting like 200" or even as much as 300": 






That was exactly when I drove over there to check it out (Feb 2007) when there was over 11 feet of snow.  I drove as far as possible into the woods where the reddest spot is at in the first map.  Just couldn't get any further with our family minivan - it was insane.  Snowmobiles were everywhere, driving up to gas stations for refueling and driving on roads instead of cars.

Up on the NW Coast we have the Tarkine Wilderness, some of which is very old and untouched.  In the SW of the state is our oldest, largest forest, mostly untouched.

A large part of it was going to be dammed for hydro power generation until a national backlash and protest put a stop to it.  That was what would have been the gordon below franklin dam.
