Obama wants to charge a $10 tax per barrel of oil sold

While this may seem palatable right now while the price of gas is cheap, paying an extra tax is really going to hurt once the price goes back up (which it inevitably will). A tax like this will bring the US more in line with what happens here in Canada. Right now we are paying around 85 cents Canadian per litre. That works out to about $3.40CAD per gallon which is about $2.47USD. I'm not sure what you guys are paying right now down there.

I can see the good things that will come out of this but I think there are better ways to encourage green initiatives. People are saying that this will never make it through congress.

I hope it doesn't make it through Congress but they are all about the money and this would line a lot of pockets even more. I would suspect gasoline would go to $8 a gallon if not more after all the hands get in the pockets.

I just filled up. $1.57/gallon.

At those prices we could all drive 700hp Challenger Hellcats and giant dually pickups, never care about gas at all.

Price of base gas in MN is $1.59 per gallon last time I checked.

$1.44 here. Will jump soon because of the annual switch to summer blend.

You need a meme of a consumer sticking a gas pump in the oil company's butt at these prices.

No, even at these prices they are making a ton.

I remember when it was 25 cents a gallon. I pumped the gas, checked the oil and cleaned the windshields of customers.

We are getting hit really hard by this here in Canada. At the current price of oil most of our oil production has become unprofitable. All of the companies that do not refine their own product have been exposed to this and we are losing thousands of jobs in Alberta. Not only that but Obama has vetoed the Keystone XL pipeline so they don't even have a market for their oil until they can explore other options. I was never a fan of that pipeline but our economy is getting hammered right now. Not only that but our currency has dropped badly.

I don't believe it is unprofitable and that pipeline was just one. It will go back up. The thugs just playing Monopoly as they always do.

Nifty map, showing gas "heat" prices across the USA!!  Just like a weather map!

Edit - forgot the link:  http://www.gasbuddy.com/GasPriceMap?z=4&...7554001804

Look at California - most over $2.34!

Yes I saw that map. If they added Canada to that map it would be glowing red. Hot like fire. We pay through the nose up here. They add all kinds of tax to the price of gas. It makes up almost half of the price.

Hey, not so fast..  not after you factor in the currency conversion.

Canada's average is nearly $0.85 per litre, then multiply that by 3.79 litres for a gallon.
http://then.gasbuddy.com/GB_Price_List.aspx?cntry=CAN

Then multiply that by 0.72 USD for 1 CAD.

That ($2.32) is actually cheaper than California's average ($2.47)!!!

Cheers!

Oil back under $30 today at $28

Gas here at $1.29

Won't last long, the "Summer Blend" is coming like every year and yet they will claim they have issues making it.
