I detest Apple and the whole iTunes ecosystem, but I don't think this is "bad" or even un expected with what they're trying to do.

They sell a homogenized, accessible, virus free experience. Given how they control content, it doesn't surprise me they control hardware access as well.

iPhones are for your mom, android is for anyone who has ever installed an OS.

Maybe I should have said "they try to control the installation of software and hardware to limit risk of virus and malfunction".

What they're selling is ease of use and uniformity.n (which has value to grandma who just wants a newfangled smartphone)
