Sony’s new Q&A explains a bit more about what devices will and won’t work between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The short version is that PS4 devices will work… with PS4 games. That will require a special adapter, but Sony says it will provide that free of charge for PSVR users. Any headset that plugs into the controller will continue to work.

DualShock 4 controllers, Sony says, will not work with PlayStation 4 games. “We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”

But as former Xbox exec Albert Penello pointed out on Twitter, some of this move by Sony rings a bit hollow. The DualSense controllers are a big depature for Sony in terms of the silhouette of the controller, but feature-wise the functionality isn’t that different. The only feature the PS5 controller offers that is completely absent on the DualShock4 is a mic. The DualSense controller has more advanced haptics, but both have haptics, motion sense, and touch controls. Penello also points out that many games coming out in the next year or two will see PS4 to PS5 (or Xbox One to Series X) upgrades. Will PlayStation 4 controller compatibility cease following a patch once it’s considered a PlayStation 5 game?

It seems less like a break in technology and more like a break in marketing. Sony wants to move forward from the PS4 and get people buying DualSense controllers. There’s no immediately obvious reason they couldn’t make the technology work. It seems more like a decision to just not do the work, or possibly even to exclude the compatibility to make the line between generations seem clearer when game generations are less of a color palette and more of a gradient these days.

Compatibility and advancements are much more gradual and organic than they once were, and moves like these feel increasingly artificial.

Today, those differences are a shadow of what they once were. These systems use PC GPU architectures and commodity x86 CPU designs. One of the advantages of the PC ecosystem has always been robust backward compatibility, and it makes sense to see Microsoft embracing it. Pushing compatibility back to the OG Xbox allows the company to appeal to any gamer who used to own a Microsoft console and might have kept a few favorite games, but hasn’t picked a side in the upcoming refresh. It’s also a baked-in reason for any current Xbox owner to stay with the platform. Microsoft might as well be waving a flag and jumping up and down in its efforts to emphasize how seriously it takes the feature. Sony, less so. As a PC gamer without a dog in this fight, demanding this kind of feature is a no-brainer to me. I don’t know how many gamers are going to buy on the basis of playing older titles, but this is one area where Microsoft seems to have an advantage.

At this point, I wouldn’t bother considering an Xbox Series S. The lack of disc drive, combined with the limits on backward compatiblity quality, kill the value proposition as far as I’m concerned. If you’re going to sell a product based on how well it runs older software, I expect it to run the older software at least as well as the previous top-end part given the similarity in specs and the substantial boost to IPC on the Series S’s behalf.

A few weeks ago, I’d have called this a no-brainer. For just $500, you can get an entire gaming system that runs close to the power of an Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, a card that often went for $1,200. Then Nvidia revealed the RTX 30-series. You’ll soon be able to pick up an RTX 3070, which is significantly more powerful than a 2080 Ti… for $500 at retail. There’s still value here, because again, this is the entire system. Also on Nvidia’s side is the introduction of RTX IO, which will massively speed up game loading time thanks to Microsoft’s DirectStorage technology and the GDDR6X RAM in those cards, but that requires a certain, currently-unknown baseline of hardware, where the new Xbox consoles will offer that super-fast loading from day one.

The Xbox Series S, meanwhile, when coupled with Game Pass, will offer gamers looking to get playing on modern hardware a way to do it without spending a fortune if they don’t need 4K resolution or have any interest in game or Blu-ray discs.

Of course, the price proposition of this could all change when Sony finally announces its own consoles’ pricing, though it’s worth noting that the PlayStation 5 variants appear to be identical side from the optical drive, meaning that Microsoft seems to have both the more powerful system and the cheaper system right now.

As of today, preorders are sold out everywhere and nobody is saying if invites will be reopened or what irate users should expect. Someone clearly dropped the ball on this. Sony needs to explain to its retail partners what “launch embargo” means, and it needs to clarify who, exactly, is going to be able to buy a PlayStation 5 on launch day.

This is part of why I’m willing to believe rumors that Sony cut the size of its PS5 order increase, even though the company denies it. Between Sony and Microsoft, Sony is the company trying to carefully manage demand with preorder windows and offering users advance registration for a chance to receive an email allowing them to pre-order a console.

It looks an awful lot as though Sony isn’t sure it’ll have stock on shelves by launch day that isn’t already earmarked for preorder customers, and while it’s not the first company to face launch shortages (Nintendo couldn’t keep a Wii on store shelves immediately after launch to save its life), this is the first time we’ve seen a preorder snafu like this.

Head over to eBay, and you can buy a PlayStation 5 preorder for $800 – $1000.

Is this a disaster? It depends on who you believe. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has promised Sony will have more systems on hand at launch than it did for the PS4. Some companies, like Wal-Mart, have implied they may reopen preorders in a few days. But with higher demand expected as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, even an increased number of systems may not be enough.

Sony can also claim the comparably high price of the PS5 due to its Dual Sense controller (a $70 accessory, should you need to buy a second one).

With that said, Bloomberg’s rumors and Nintendo’s own statements both seem to imply that this new console is more than just a minor Switch refresh. Nintendo has talked about VR and AR technology from time to time in the past, but never in a way that suggested it was particularly excited by the idea. Nothing in the text Nintendo provided actually implies the company is working on a 4K console. If anything, it implies the opposite, with repeated references to how Nintendo can’t spend its time chasing the same rabbits Sony and Microsoft prefer. What have Sony and Microsoft been pumping this cycle? Backward compatibility, 4K gaming, and 8K “support.”

Nintendo, it seems to me, is telling us it doesn’t plan to compete on those merits. I don’t think there’d be anything wrong with building a better Switch and calling it Switch 2.0, but Nintendo seems to be implying it has different goals in mind, or even that this could be a product that exists alongside or in addition to the Switch. It’s also very early for Nintendo to be talking about a Switch replacement. The Switch will only be four years old in 2021. Every previous Nintendo console has lived for considerably longer, including the largely-unmourned Wii U.

It still seems to me that Nintendo may not be talking about the product some analysts think it is. I can imagine an upgraded Switch, especially if Nintendo wants to do a “Switch XL” or “New Switch” model. I can also imagine that the company is building a brand-new device either intended to replace the Switch or exist in the market alongside it. What seems least likely is a straight upgrade of the current model with 4K support but no additional gameplay hooks or features. It’s a bad idea to declare anything impossible in 2020, but Nintendo would be breaking with its own history these past 20 years if it launches anything so straightforward or so soon.

If you don’t already have a pre-order, you’ll probably be out of luck. Every retailer offering the Series X appears to have sold out within an hour or two this morning. Stock was still appearing intermittently at Best Buy around noon ET, but we haven’t seen any slots pop up for some time now. The Series S took longer to run out at most stores. While the Microsoft Store sold out earlier, it’s back in stock as of now. That probably won’t last long, though.

in related news, another warning: be careful with what you're ordering. The Amazon page for the Xbox One X (Microsoft's previous generation flagship console, not to be confused with the next-gen Xbox Series X) has seen an uptick in popularity in the order of 747%. One can hope this is the work of bots misordering consoles due to their similar names and the fact that both consoles tend to come up in searches for Xbox Series X. However, some of these could be the result of less knowledgeable (or less attentive) users (or parents of users) thinking they're purchasing the upcoming console. Unless interest has just exploded two months before the next-gen launch, which is doubtful, to say the least. Always double-check your order before committing.

Microsoft has been on a studio-buying spree lately, snapping up Bethesda (gaining id Software, Arkane Studios, and MachineGames) in 2020, and companies such as PlayGround Games, Obsidian, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, and Compulsion Games over the past couple of years. Where Bethesda is concerned, Microsoft has said that the entire point is to create an ecosystem. In theory, at least, that means some of the titles developed by these studios in the future will also come to PlayStation 5, though there could still be timed exclusives for the Xbox / PC side of things.

Sony, of course, continues to invest in building a more conventional ecosystem of first-party PlayStation 5 titles that don’t focus on sharing games across devices in quite the same way, probably because Sony lacks Microsoft’s ties to anything like an equivalent Windows ecosystem. The next-generation of console devices has barely launched, but games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Astro’s Playroom have both driven chatter in ways that the Xbox Series X has struggled to match.

Both companies are dealing with this problem, with Sony suggesting that true next-generation games are probably a year or two away, but that gap also means Microsoft has time to polish its strategy for enticing gamers in the Xbox or PC universe to sign up for Xbox Game Pass. Sony will benefit over the same period from its own exclusive releases, even if they aren’t aimed at quite the same goal.

Console launches are typically considered an opportunity to reset the competitive standing between the manufacturers, but given the strangeness of the present moment, it’s hard to get a feel for how the market is reacting to the systems. Early data suggests demand for the PS5 is running nearly 2:1 ahead of Xbox according to StockX. The disc-based versions of each system are selling ahead of the digital-only editions in both cases.

So, the new XBOX consoles are performing just under half the sales of the PS5 consoles. Pretty much exactly what the extremetech article was suggesting.

Got to love how the PS5 is edging out the XBOXes in performance in multiplatform games that run on both, despite all of M$ grandiose claims about how much more powerful the XBOX Series X would be in comparison to PS5. Steve James, global PR and influencer manager at Cooler Master, told Tom’s Hardware that Cooler Master has been working with KFC on the system since the restaurant's original tweet in June.

“The feedback from the KFC fans was too great not to make the console come to life,” James explained. “We met up with the team and exchanged some ideas and went on from there really.”

When asked if the KFConsole is viewed as a rival to Sony and Microsoft's next-gen consoles, the exec said, "We like to think we’ve built a competitive system with the specs we have in it."

It might seem odd for a PC components and peripherals vendor to be in bed (in the kitchen?) with KFC, but Cooler Master community and event manager Ann Ann Kao told us the partnership made sense to the vendor due to its connection with the PC modding community, which also includes the Cooler Master Case Mod World Series.

“These guys can recreate cars, superheroes, sharks, tanks into PCs, so a bucket was definitely doable,” Kao told us.

More details on the system's tech should arrive next month. We're also still waiting for details from the head chefs on how many KFConsoles will be fried up, price and availability.

I doubt the advertising has factored much into the sales so far, frankly. Sony has sold every PS5 they can make and will continue to do so for much of 2021. Advertising won't lead to more sales (because there aren't enough consoles to sell to people), but it does increase mindshare.

Not to mention the new XBOXes don't have one single exclusive game to their name at the moment, just back-compat while PS5 has Astro's Playroom and Demon Souls so far and much, much more to come.

Well, this is hilarious.  I was watching a YT video about the Atari VCS (I cannot believe this bit of vaporware actually launched in the end!) and the dude made a very good point,  this thing has been on the market next to no time at all, yet it has 7 different games in addition to those built-in on its store - which is 7 more games than the XBOX Series consoles can lay claim to!

This implies the company increased its 7nm capacity by 1.27x throughout the year.

Clearly, it hasn’t been enough, and Nvidia’s decision to build with Samsung on 8N instead of tapping TSMC’s 7nm hasn’t been enough to save Ampere’s availability, either. Nvidia is currently expected to move to TSMC 7nm for additional Ampere production in 2021, which may put even more pressure on the situation.

Relief might come in the form of drawdowns on 7nm mobile demand as companies transition to 5nm. Currently, a number of companies have told consumers to expect better product availability after the March – April 2021 timeframe, which could reflect anything from new capacity coming online, to improved yields, to decreased 7nm utilization as companies transition to 5nm. It could even be that companies are forecasting decreased shutdown levels by that point, which might lead to a slackening of demand, especially in the short term. Once people can leave the house safely again, we’ll probably see spending flow out of video games and home entertainment and back towards other types of leisure, even if the pandemic creates a long-term uptick in the number of people buying consoles, subscribing to streaming services, or working from home.

For now, evidence indicates the PlayStation 5 is strongly outselling the Xbox Series (both flavors) globally, with a tighter (but still Sony-favoring) competition in the US. Whether AMD can do anything to put more console SoCs in the hands of its partners is unknown. Also, wasn’t it the PlayStation 5 that was supposed to be facing the severe supply constraints?

Just, do yourself, your console and its warranty a favor and don't pick furniture that they fit snugly inside -- even if they fit, you'll want to give the consoles ample breathing space to deal with the heat output of the AMD internals.

Companies competing in the same market often use design choices to differentiate themselves. Microsoft emphasizes the flexibility of offering AA support. Sony’s DualShock 4 copy notes that you can charge its internal battery while playing. We’ve seen this kind of behavior in the PC market as well. When Nvidia emphasized 3-D gaming, AMD focused on its own Eyefinity displays. A few years later, when AMD was talking up DirectX 12, Nvidia was putting a much heavier emphasis on VR. In this case, Microsoft and Sony maintain a slight feature difference in what they offer and how they offer it.

As far as Microsoft’s controller is concerned, I can testify that the battery life from regular AAs isn’t great, and it gets a lot worse if you have rumble enabled in a rumble-heavy title. If you don’t play much, regular AAs are fine, but if you intend to game on a regular basis you’ll want to invest in some rechargeable batteries for the Xbox controller. They’ll pay for themselves in fairly short order.

Animal Crossing will beat it next quarter, based on how well each is selling. Nintendo moved a total of 176.1 million games in calendar 2020, an increase of 43 percent over last year.

Despite the impact of smartphones, dedicated handheld gaming is very much alive — at least if you’re a Nintendo fan. Don’t say such things near PlayStation Vita forums.

Could Sony Not Just Have Built More?
Not really. Nobody could see this pandemic coming, and the resulting extreme demand from it. Sony's PS5 contains AMD hardware, which is manufactured by foundry TSMC — and TSMC is fully at capacity and cannot turn out any more chips. Considering that TSMC also makes the Xbox Series X's hardware, along with CPUs and GPUs for AMD, and lots of chips in the mobile and automotive space... there's not much capacity left to go around.

And by "not much" we mean there's zero capacity. TSMC is literally selling every wafer it can possibly make, at premium prices. TSMC is investing billions into new chip foundries around the world, anticipating even higher demand for its services in the coming years. However, each new fab takes years to build, so it will be a while before fabless companies (like AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and more) can start getting more wafers.

The smarter move for Sony with the PS5, by far, would have been to price the $400 version of the PS5 below its BOM cost, keep the standard version above BOM and therefore profitable, encourage customers towards the more-expensive version, and take the long view.

Everyone who buys the Digital Edition of a console is definitionally going to plug into Sony’s digital distribution network. At least some PS5 sales are going to new customers, and at least some of those new customers have already paid for a PlayStation Plus subscription or bought a game online. Whatever modest hit Sony takes on the Digital Edition up-front is worth the long-term revenue gain from said customer.

ExtremeTech cannot prove that Sony isn’t taking a per-console loss and we aren’t claiming otherwise, but we think the data supports a more nuanced conclusion. Sony may be losing money on some of its console SKUs, but we don’t think it’s losing money on every single sale.

Sony also said it has been difficult to meet demand due to ongoing semiconductor shortages and that the company will do everything it can to ship more hardware.

The “scalpers are really just another form of reseller” argument would hold up better if the business relationship was voluntary. Much of the Forbes article is concerned with the various ways scalpers bypass website security and subvert ordering systems. It’s hard to imagine Walmart trumpeting the availability of Fruit of the Loom underwear while the manufacturer briefed the press on its efforts to prevent sales.

Retailers continue to insist that they’ve closed these loopholes and that they are taking every precaution possible against bots. Somehow, bot authors also keep talking up their successes, and products keep showing up on black markets. Based on what we know about the bot market structure, most of these products use a subscription model, implying that customer churn is fairly high — most people, presumably, subscribe to the service for only as long as they need to score a desired product.

The people using bots to bypass website security systems and order products before they’re even supposed to go on-sale aren’t just scalping. These people are abusing point-of-sale systems to artificially restrict supply and inflate the value of their own inventory. Third-party analysis has suggested scalpers are accounting for 10-15 percent of Xbox and PS5 sales. That’s enough to meaningfully constrict supply when manufacturers are already having a difficult time keeping systems on shelves. In some cases, there are knock-on effects to these shenanigans. PC component prices have been all over the map, making it cheaper, in a lot of cases, to buy a machine rather than build one. Scoring 10-20 Nvidia GPUs may earn the buyer a nice chunk of change on the black market, but the only value they’re providing is to themselves.

For the rest of us, this is an unwelcome, unwanted change. People should not have to subscribe to bots to have a chance at scoring products at MSRP, and we wouldn’t count on a sympathetic response any time soon.

iFixit does a good job explaining why all potentiometers eventually fail (it boils down to wear and tear). The closest the article comes to an explanation for why the PS5 might be failing is a link to an Alps RKJXV ThumbPointer joystick assembly. This product, which is apparently used in a wide range of joysticks, is rated for 2,000,000 “directional operations.” According to iFixit, players can start hitting that limit within 4-7 months if they play just two hours per day.

If you’re wondering how Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony can use the same hardware with only Nintendo and Sony suffering drift, we’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that you have an eye for asking the right questions. The bad news is that Microsoft may indeed have the same problem.

Microsoft is actively attempting to prevent customers from having their case heard in court. It wants the judge to instead compel its users into private arbitration, where a much higher percentage of decisions tend to be in favor of corporations and individuals would be forced to deal with the company individually. There’s a counter-argument in play that the license terms for Xbox Live make no mention of controllers. Nevertheless, all three console manufacturers have been sued for this issue.

The JoyCon, Xbox, and PlayStation 5 controller issues all stem from the same hardware. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are prioritizing cost over reliability. Each manufacturer uses components that are not rated for the amount of time gamers will actually play over multi-year periods, especially if more than one person in the household games. The PlayStation 5’s problem is apparently not unique, and absent some design alterations, it isn’t going away. If they aren’t going to fix it, the three companies ought to at least make the problem easier to repair.

The report claimed that Samsung is set to manufacture a 7-inch OLED display; the current Switch boasts a 6.2-inch LCD display. Unfortunately it seems the relatively low 720p resolution won’t change, which will likely disappoint handheld players.

Bloomberg reported that mass production for the display is supposed to start in June with an initial goal of 1 million units per month. Nintendo will have to wait for other parts as well, of course, but this suggests a new Switch could arrive this year.
