{"id":11911,"date":"2009-10-06T18:44:20","date_gmt":"2009-10-06T18:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=11911"},"modified":"2009-10-07T03:22:03","modified_gmt":"2009-10-07T03:22:03","slug":"nvidia-gpu-technology-conference-final-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/nvidia-gpu-technology-conference-final-day-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Nvidia GPU Technology Conference, Final Day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The third and final day of Nvidia\u2019s GPU technology conference was last Friday, October 3, 2009.\u00a0 It was another beautiful day in San Jose and the conference started even earlier, at 8:30 AM.\u00a0 Even though it was early, the keynote address was jam-packed and standing room only as the attendees eagerly awaited Richard Kerris of Lucas Films to give his one hour presentation.\u00a0 It was worth getting up early for as it was spectacular and we will cover it briefly in this Part 3, Day 3 of our short series covering Nvidia\u2019s GPU technology conference.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/render_fire-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Render_fire\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/render_fire_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C91\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Render_fire\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first installment of this short series covering Nvidia\u2019s GTC, Day One was published <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=11661\">here<\/a> on Thursday, the morning of the second day of the conference.\u00a0 Day Two coverage was published yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/?p=11825\">here<\/a>.<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If you want to check out the jam-packed schedule, or read anything and everything to do with the GTC or the just-released Fermi GPU architecture, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/gpu_technology_conference.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/gpu_technology_conference.html', 'Nvidia\u2019s own site']);\" >Nvidia\u2019s own site<\/a> has a wealth of information available from the conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nvidia\u2019s three-in-one GPU technology conference used an entire floor at the impressive luxury <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmont.com\/sanjose\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.fairmont.com\/sanjose', 'Fairmont San Jose Hotel']);\" >Fairmont San Jose Hotel<\/a> in beautiful downtown San Jose, California for 3 days \u2013 September 30 through October 2.\u00a0 We are finishing up for you our impressions of this event for day 3. For the final part of this series, you can expect a more polished summary of Fermi architecture when we review all of our notes, transcribe all of our audio and the forty-plus gigabytes of full HD-HR (1080i) video that we shot, and finally make sense of everything that we observed.\u00a0 We will also post our own video and links to full discussions of what we covered at Nvidia\u2019s GTC. In this part, we are also including a few impressions of some of the exhibits.\u00a0 In addition, ABT had two separate semi-private press conferences in the 20th floor penthouse with Nvidia officials that we will cover for you today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Lookingin1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Lookingin\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/Lookingin_thumb1.jpg?resize=244%2C104\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Lookingin\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The main things that we carried away from the first two days of Nvidia\u2019s GTC \u2013 besides realizing that new architecture and a new much more powerful \u201cFermi\u201d GPU will be shipping this year \u2013 is that this conference is about software, not hardware.\u00a0 We saw incredible breakthroughs using the GPU in high-performance computing that are changing the world.\u00a0 We saw an announcement being made of Nvidia\u2019s commitment to their new \u201cecosystem\u201d of support for the computing and programming communities for their \u201cTesla\u201d <em>General Purpose Units<\/em> that is very much like the incredible support they have been giving for years to developers in the gaming community with their<em> the way it is meant to be played program (twiimtbp). <\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Nvidia\u2019s expanded vision, it\u2019s not just about graphics anymore.\u00a0 They want to announce a new platform in its own right \u2013 GPU computing.\u00a0 According to them, the PC platform is largely unchanged for 25 years and parallel computing is now becoming disruptive to the old platform.\u00a0 Nvidia wants to be known as a company that makes <em>general<\/em> processing chips that <em>also<\/em> have amazing graphics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/introfermi-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"IntroFermi\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/introfermi_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C147\" border=\"0\" alt=\"IntroFermi\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We saw Nvidia announce new support for traditional programming languages like C++ and Fortran that ride on top of CUDA to make it much easier for high performance users to write in their own domain languages.\u00a0 We also saw Nvidia release new GPU\/CPU debugging tools and even make Microsoft Visual Studio completely GPU friendly.\u00a0 Of course, they released their new 3billion transistor chip Fermi which promises major performance increases in high performance computing &#8211; up to 8 times faster in peak double precision performance!\u00a0 Of course, ECC (error checking, so necessary to high-performance computing) will only be featured in Tesla\u2019s (supercomputing; no output to a display) Fermi chips as there would be a small performance hit for Quadro workstations or especially for GeForce gaming.\u00a0 So, Nvidia is very flexible with their modular-designed new Fermi architecture.\u00a0 Well, today we will look at some of their new tools and a quick glance at Visual Studio.\u00a0 However, first, we want to report on the morning keynote of the third and final day of the GTC.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Introduction--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Opening Keynote, Day 3 \u2013 Richard Kerris of Lucas Films<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Richard Kerris showed his clips from the &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; and &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; as well as from current and even unreleased movies (that we cannot show you) which demonstrated how much progress has been made at Lucasfilm due to the increased power of GPUs.\u00a0 It has changed the very way they do production and has speeded it up greatly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/lucaspresentation-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"LucasPresentation\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/lucaspresentation_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C167\" border=\"0\" alt=\"LucasPresentation\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">One of the most impressive and difficult effects is to render fire properly.\u00a0 Without the GPU, it would not be possible to do it in such detail and with such realism (or surrealistic \u201cfantastic\u201d effects). Here is what we meant when we said \u201cNvidia killed Dumbledore&#8221;; their GPUs made this fire rendering possible in &#8220;Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/nvidiakilleddumbledore-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"NvidiaKilledDumbledore\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/nvidiakilleddumbledore_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C108\" border=\"0\" alt=\"NvidiaKilledDumbledore\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The entire scene in the fire\/water cave except for the actors was purely CGI and incredibly complex.\u00a0 It is only made possible by the GPU.\u00a0 In fact, they pointed out that the parallel processing of GPUs actually mimics how our brains work.\u00a0 It is this programming that is responsible for the continually increasing quality of animation. To that end, Lucasfilm has begun to construct a custom GPU render farm to better harness the power of the GPU.\u00a0 In fact, they brought over fifty people to this conference.<\/p>\n<p>The presentation ended with scenes from several movies including next year\u2019s \u201cThe Last Airbender\u201d from director M. Night Shyamalan that we were asked not to photograph.\u00a0 It was a very impressive demonstration of the current state of the art.\u00a0 Now, it&#8217;s off in just a couple of minutes to the Peddie\/Jensen &#8220;Fireside chat&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ECS Summit \u2013 Peddie\/Jensen<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This \u201cfireside chat\u201d with Jon Peddie interviewing Jen-Hsun Huang (Jensen), was billed as \u201cJensen unplugged\u201d- but I believe they really mean \u201cunleashed\u201d.\u00a0 Jensen likened himself to the Chris Rock of CEOs in that he \u201cactually says what is on his mind\u201d.\u00a0 This interview was billed as unscripted and it consisted mostly of Jensen responding to Peddie\u2019s questions and taking what ever direction he wanted.\u00a0 At the very end, a couple of members of the audience got to ask Jensen questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/jensen_peddie-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Jensen_Peddie\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/jensen_peddie_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C161\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Jensen_Peddie\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In answer to a Peddie question, Jensen started out by talking about radically different corporate philosophies of different companies in a recessions.\u00a0 The \u201csafe\u201d way is to just stay alive but he says he never picks that way nor does he panic. He told the emerging companies to first ask if what they are attempting to do is even <em>possible<\/em> \u2013 if you can afford to do what you are doing.\u00a0 Then he said an emerging company in a recession needs to ask themselves if they really believe in what they are doing. During this, I thought about our own emerging company and our own vision and silently answered \u2018yes\u2019 for all of us. He said, \u201cbelieve in what you believe in and keep going\u201d.\u00a0 Indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jensen acknowledged that\u00a0 Nvidia \u201cdelivered badly last year\u201d.\u00a0 He said it was \u201cOK because we did the right thing for the right reasons.\u201d\u00a0 He said he is not going to slow down but he did examine Nvidia\u2019s priorities regarding parallel computing; they are not going to stop investing and he renewed his commitment to creating and improving developer tools for it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">One of the things Jensen stressed was his disdain for the extreme emphases placed on \u201cfinancial performance\u201d which he likened to getting grades in school; except now you were being graded by your employees, customers and shareholders.\u00a0 He said, it is far more important to do what you do \u201cfor the right reason\u201d and to make the experience worthwhile; one should not go to school just to get good grades.\u00a0 Rather,\u00a0 good grades come from the hard work and effort that you put into learning; if you do it right, you get good results.\u00a0 Jensen reminded his listeners, \u201cKeep the game separate from the score&#8217;\u201d.\u00a0 It is very good advice and it was delivered in the most enthusiastic manner possible.\u00a0 You can sum up much of what he says by this: \u201cIf you do amazing things, the world notices\u201d.\u00a0 Well, I have to agree with him again as that is my own belief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The discussion continued after Peddie commented about the low attrition rate at Nvidia compared with other companies.\u00a0 Jensen said he wants to keep one, so that only the people who really fit in well, will work there; in so many words, they both should be happy.\u00a0 It is clearly important for Jensen that his employees believe in their company.\u00a0 He then emphasized how this conference was all about software and about Nvidia providing tools for a currently very tiny market because it is the right thing to do at the right time.<\/p>\n<p>He talked about the few acquisitions that Nvidia has made each year and how important it is for the companies to be matched to each other, as in a marriage.\u00a0 Jensen said he deplored acquiring technology for the sole purpose of keeping it from the market and from the competition.\u00a0 He mentioned he was proud of Nvidia\u2019s promoting the little startup Keyhole Corporation that became google earth.\u00a0 Nvidia is always looking for a worthy company to promote with no limit to their budget for it; depending on need, up to the company\u2019s entire 1.4 Billion dollars if necessary, he added for emphasis.<\/p>\n<p>Jensen said that one should see the world with optimism and to \u201cdo good\u201d.\u00a0 He told the emerging companies, &#8220;if you don\u2019t build it, they cannot come&#8221;.\u00a0 So there will always be some uncertainty which means there are risks to be taken.\u00a0 However, he said it is obtuse to think of \u201ctaking\u201d something at the expense of others.\u00a0 Rather one should take advantage of what is already there to do bigger and better things.\u00a0 However, I am not sure how he relates it to gaining marketshare.<\/p>\n<p>As if to answer him, Peddie asked Jensen about the current \u201csqueeze play\u201d by Intel on Nvidia and what they intended to do about it.\u00a0 Jensen answered, &#8220;by building amazing things\u201d.\u00a0 He then went on to list the criteria Nvidia uses to determine if they should help an emerging company: 1) it has never been done before, 2) it is incredibly difficult to do, and 3) that company is uniquely qualified to do it \u2013 and I thought of our own vision as I mentally checked off \u2018yes\u2019 to each one of his requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Peddie then touched on Nvidia\u2019s Fellowship program which provides support for people in the form of scholarships.\u00a0 He did not mention Jensen\u2019s own personal contribution of $30 million dollars last month to build an expanded <a href=\"http:\/\/news-service.stanford.edu\/news\/2008\/september10\/building-091008.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/news-service.stanford.edu\/news\/2008\/september10\/building-091008.html', 'engineering school at Stanford']);\" >engineering school at Stanford<\/a>.\u00a0 The Jen-Hsun Huang School of Engineering Center (as in the rendering below) will feature a four-story building housing ultimately a \u201cbookless\u201d library, conference center and a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/school-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"school\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/school_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C184\" border=\"0\" alt=\"school\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What makes Nvidia unique is their enthusiasm; their money is not unique \u2013 their people are, according to Jensen.\u00a0 And again, he picked the words \u201cexquisite\u201d and \u201camazing\u201d to describe the level of work and the products he expected his company to produce in striving for perfection.\u00a0 When asked about the next ten years, he responded that \u201cthe computing industry will be totally different.\u00a0 Hardware will be less magical\u201d.\u00a0 He said he pictured the day when a \u201cpersonal computer will come free with a service\u201d and the ones that you buy will be truly amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Jensen went on to say that when you increase performance by 1,000 times, everything changes.\u00a0 He also likened these times to 1995 \u2013 a metaphysical 15 year cycle of innovation \u2013 when Win95 was released and everything since then has been a refinement of it. He says PC hardware has made great progress but now it is time to advance software.\u00a0\u00a0 Jensen said the key to future hardware is \u201cefficiency\u201d and that \u201cmore of everything is a bad idea\u201d.\u00a0 In other words, he believes hardware power requirements will not go up but remain flat due to innovation. Jensen finally concluded his fireside chat with taking some questions from the audience and he urged people to be enthusiast and optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>After that was a panel discussion dealing with raising capital in difficult financial times but this editor was off to the exhibits and then to learn about CUDA and Nvidia\u2019s new debugging tools as well as some hands on experience with Nexus now integrated with Visual Studio.\u00a0 It was lunch time also.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: Opening Keynote--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">New Tools for CUDA including Nexus within Visual Studio<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The GTC featured one entire segment of the conference devoted to programming and developing for the GPU.\u00a0 This editor has not touched any programming whatsoever since the early 1980s and was amazed to see the new tools.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/cuda_home.html\" onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/cuda_home.html', 'CUDA']);\" >CUDA<\/a> is not going away.\u00a0 It is Nvidia\u2019s proprietary GPU programming language that is the equivalent of x86 instructions for the CPU, but for the GPU.\u00a0 However, most researchers do not want to learn a new language and would much prefer to program and debug in their own domain language.\u00a0 Nvidia has released tools to do this with full support for Fortran, C++, C, OpenCL, DirectCompute, Java, and Python, and to top it off, Nexus, the world\u2019s first fully integrated computing application development environment within Microsoft Studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This editor attended a couple of programming hand-on demonstrations. Here is a summary chart of the tools that are currently available and what is coming soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/toolsSummary1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"toolsSummary\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/toolsSummary_thumb1.jpg?resize=244%2C144\" border=\"0\" alt=\"toolsSummary\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We then saw a demonstration of how to actually do some debugging.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/cuda_debug-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"CUDA_debug\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/cuda_debug_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C159\" border=\"0\" alt=\"CUDA_debug\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These tools are intuitive and are just what is needed, and the instructor went step-by step on how to effectively do this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/debug1-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"9.CUDA_streams\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/9-cuda_streams_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C155\" border=\"0\" alt=\"9.CUDA_streams\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, off to the Virtual Studio Lab where I got completely lost attempting to follow along.\u00a0 However, I do realize that the premier application that Microsoft has created for its purpose is now completely GPU-friendly with Nexus.\u00a0 Again, Nvidia targets the inceased productivity of the programmers by giving them access to tools that will allow them to produce better applications much the same as they work with developers in their <em>the Way it is meant to be Played Program<\/em>.\u00a0 I expect they will get the same results with this new program and they will grow a community that comes to depend on Nvidia to make their work more productive.\u00a0 It is brilliant planning ahead that is applied and adapted for a new industry.\u00a0 We can see that Nvidia intends to be the industry leader in the GPU high performance computing future as they are pioneers now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/followalongvs-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"VirtualStudio\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/virtualstudio_thumb-jpg.jpg?resize=244%2C171\" border=\"0\" alt=\"VirtualStudio\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We see an impressive commitment by Nvidia to their ecosystem of developers and programmers with these great tools.\u00a0 As a practical result, in the months to come we can expect to see better and better applications come out of this.\u00a0 This is industry shaping and transformation in action, at its near-beginning.<\/p>\n<p><!--pagetitle: New SW Tools--><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Meeting with Nvidia Officials<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ABT was fortunate to have over an hour to sit down with Nvidia\u2019s Drew Henry, the general manager of the GeForce business unit and Jason Paul, GeForce product manager.\u00a0 These men are sincerely enthusiastic and attentive \u2013 and you have to consider that they have been doing these same exact kinds of interviews with the press basically non-stop for 2 days!\u00a0 This is very rare to find in most other companies and yet we encountered it over-and-over.\u00a0 Clearly these people do what they love and love what they do and it is noted as being one of the keys to personal success, never mind for success as a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The second meeting was with Andy Keane, general manager of the GPU computing business unit and with Andrew Humber, Tesla &amp; CUDA Enterprise Products.\u00a0 Before the meeting we chatted about many things including moving to a new house \u2013 which one of them had to do over the weekend, something I hate doing.\u00a0 Each of these meetings went over whitepapers and answered questions that we had.\u00a0 Mostly it was clarifying what was said in the conference and emphasizing what Nvidia wanted us to take away from the conference; that they were committed to this new direction in parallel computing, while not forgetting the rest of their ecosystem and customers.<\/p>\n<p>At this meeting was clarified the naming of the new architecture and we got to look at the new Fermi GPU.\u00a0 They said they were announcing Fermi early to prepare the industry for it.\u00a0 We could not help but think to ourselves that the timeliness of their announcement would also prepare their fans to ignore the competition\u2019s latest DX11 offerings and to wait for the Fermi GeForce GTX.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/RawGPU_ob1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"RawGPU_ob\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.wp.com\/alienbabeltech.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/RawGPU_ob_thumb1.jpg?resize=244%2C168\" border=\"0\" alt=\"RawGPU_ob\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They insisted that Fermi would also be a formidable gaming GPU and it would be the single fastest GPU when it is shipped this year .\u00a0 They said that Fermi\u2019s 384-bit bus is very well-balanced with GDDR5\u2019s increased bandwidth, although lesser models are set up to also use GDDR3.\u00a0 They pointed out their philosophical differences with ATi and said that within 18 months everyone would see the clear divergence.\u00a0 ATi is mostly committed to graphics chips while Nvidia wants to elevate the GPU to a true co-processor with the CPU.\u00a0 They also pointed out that PhysX was making the biggest difference in the gaming experience along with 3D Vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They pointed out that Ion was not an Atom exclusive and that Nvidia would build it for any CPU.\u00a0 However, they were not going to build DMI for Intel nor were they going to build new motherboards for AMD as their high-end CPU business had mostly collapsed; so, no new core logic for AMD in the near future is the prognosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They also talked about their licensing of SLi to motherboard manufacturers and how it \u201cjust works\u201d because they have one of the largest compatibility testing labs in the world where they test all conceivable hardware combinations.\u00a0 They are proud of their \u201cteam testing\u201d also, where every game setting is tested individually .\u00a0 They also said to look forward to a much improved hybrid SLi for extreme power savings in notebooks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We also discussed the improvements in the Fermi architecture over Tesla\u2019s besides the obvious doubling of the cores to 512.\u00a0 They pointed out the new GigaThread technology that allows for each solver to be a kernel to execute instructions is much faster than waiting in a queue for the previous instructions to complete in the old serial fashion.\u00a0 Thus there is greater efficiency when all 512 cores are used instead of having idle waiting time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They were very proud of their new debugging tools which would allow a much higher quality of application to be created more quickly and we met CUDA\u2019s creator, Ian Buck, in our second session.\u00a0 We asked if the philosophical differences between their chief scientists have made any changes yet.\u00a0 Bill Dally brings extraordinary parallel programming experience to Nvidia but Fermi was started about four years ago; but into the tools and the complete support \u201cecosystem\u201d for the programmers and developers that work with high-performance computing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What is most impressive is that Nvidia has been planning this for more than 4 years \u2013 for that is how long it has taken to go from design to production for Fermi!\u00a0 Nvidia has created a 3 billion transistor powerhouse that should also be the fastest graphics card when it is released later this year as the GeForce GTX.\u00a0 But Nvidia no longer wants to be known as a company that makes Graphics cards.\u00a0 They want to be known as a company that makes great processors that have amazing graphics.\u00a0 Well, we are indeed looking forward to the Fermi GF100 GTX but realize the importance of what Nvidia has accomplished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We saw hundreds of enthusiastic attendees \u2013 something that cannot be faked \u2013 really appreciate the new technology that is coming and what was released here.\u00a0 It is exactly what researchers and scientists need for continuing their important work in almost every field where parallel computing is useful.\u00a0 We saw grateful programmers and developers paying rapt attention to CUDA demonstrations and to new tools that will make their life easier as they turn out better applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This editor is very impressed as he is certain that he has glimpsed the future and is now able to see clearly where ABT fits in with our own vision of changing the way humans interact on the Internet.\u00a0 We will need the GPU\u2019s computing power and cloud computing to make what we are attempting real.\u00a0 And we expect to use the services of other companies and programming tools that are being made available by Nvidia to make our 21st century dream solid of us interacting in real-time and in all languages in a 3D forum world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We expect to be posting more information about Nvidia\u2019s GTC 2009.\u00a0 We still have 40 GB of High definition, high resolution (1080p) video to work on, edit and upload and much more to say about the Fermi architecture as the launch of the new GTX gets closer.\u00a0 Make sure you join us on our ABT forums to discuss anything on your mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nvidia gets a 9\/10 for this conference;
